ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 4 May 1935
Jimmy McMullan's Villa end the campaign in torrid fashion as they concede eight without reply in their final two games.
The season had at times proved to be one of the poorest ever seen at Villa Park as an often disjointed Villa side struggled for extended periods under McMullan.
There were highlights, the emergence of Frank Broome for one, but goalscoring was far less of an issue that concession. Ironically McMullan dropped Frank Broome for the game at Ewood Park for a player hitherto suffering from injury, only to be recalled to the team at the 11th hour when that player, Archie Watkins, inevitably broke down. Hardly an endorsement of his managerial judgement.
Across 43 games Villa managed just 6 clean sheets under McMullan, conceding 90 goals.
Villa conceded four or more goals on eight occasions in 1934-35 having done so five times across 48 games the previous season.
Under McMullan Villa also lost four consecutive games for the first time since 1927.
Overall Villa had recorded fourteen wins, thirteen draws and fifteen defeats in forty two division one games under Jimmy McMullan in his first season in charge as Villa finished 13th.
Although that was the same finishing position as the previous year under Secretary Manager Billy Smith, McMullan’s season had been significantly worse, generally overseeing inconsistent and at times hapless performances.
That this was done with largely the same squad as had served under Smith simply underlined the concerns that either McMullan wasn’t the right choice for Villa’s first manager or that the structure itself wasn’t the right one.
Having only known long managerial tenures it was entirely conceivable that McMullan wouldn't remain in post for 1934-35.
