ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 13 February 1937
Villa find themselves three down to Plymouth after half an hour but two Eric Houghon penalties haul Villa back into the game with just a single goal deficit at half time.
Immediately after the resumption Frank Broome gets his first of the game to equalise as Freddie Haycock assists.
Within minutes Plymouth again take the lead but Broome grabs his brace, Houghton his hat-trick and Haycock three assists as Villa win a remarkable game.
Villa win for the first time in six League games as Eric Houghton hits Villa's third hat-trick of the season.
Villa come out on top in a nine goal thriller with Argyle as they win for the first time in six League games to make it just six wins in the last twenty three second tier games and an overall record of ten wins, eleven draws and eight defeats in twenty nine division two matches.
Jimmy McMullan had recorded five wins, five draws and three defeats in his thirteen division two matches in charge and his successor Jimmy Hogan had now delivered five wins, six draws and five defeats in his sixteen game spell.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Harry Morton made the last of his 207 appearances for Villa aged 28 before moving on to Everton in March 1937 with and appearance record second only to Billy George.
