ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 2 April 1938
Despite his awful performance at Old Trafford referee Barton from Repton is put in charge of the return fixture at Villa Park. And yes, he did it again.
Frank Broome scores for the ninth time in eleven as Villa record three consecutive
Villa make it thirteen wins in nineteen division two games as they take the outright lead at the top of the table for the first time this season, with Manchester United well beaten, Sheffield United and Coventry also lose and Villa have a one point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand on those below.
Villa however have been poor at capitalising on their games in hand through the season with mid table Burnley up next.
Villa record a third consecutive League win to make it twenty wins, six draws and eight defeats in thirty four division two games.

🆘 A referee whose officiating is almost too weird for words. From his offside atrocities at Old Trafford to his phantom free kick / bounce ball at Villa Park before sanctioning the same offence in two different instances with two different punishments. That Villa benefitted isn't the point. After the game, to much hilarity, referee Barton claims the penalty wasn't for the offence everyone saw after all but was for another one, that nobody witnessed, including the alleged wronged player, John Maund.
