🟥 1 May 1971, Villa 3-4 Wrexham, Villa Park

ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 1 May 1971
Villa lose by the odd goal in seven as they are beaten at home by Wrexham to leave them joined in fourth place by Chesterfield, Bristol Rovers and Mansfield, each on 51 points but Villa are the only one of the four to have a game left to play meaning a draw will hand then outright fourth place in the final third division table. Once again though Vic Crowe is absent scouting leaving first team duties to assistant Ron Wylie.
Vic Crowe's Villa's terrible run of form since their League Cup final appearance continues having won once in fourteen games, losing five and drawing eight. As a result Villa have a record of eighteen wins, fifteen draws and twelve defeats in forty five division three games so far this season.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper John Dunn made his final appearance for Villa before moving to Charlton Athletic in July. Dunn played for Villa between 1967-68 and 1970-71 making 118 appearances.
