Having Played 20, Points 21 Villa comprehensively fell out of the promotion places for 1973-74 with little sign of likely revival. Sitting in 12th place having been 2nd just weeks earlier, Villa were now six points behind Luton Town in the final promotion spot (Played 20, Points 27) and twelve behind leaders Middlesbrough (Played 21, Points 33) Meanwhile, Villa left back, Charlie Aitken, made his 478th League appearance for Villa - equalling Billy Walker's record.
