*Sunday Mirror*
Sunday, 17 August 1975
A 46,000 CROWD acclaiming Aston Villa’s return to the First Division after eight years was stunned into disbelieving silence by the softest goal ever scored by Leeds hot-shot Peter Lorimer. Lorimer, already on the scoresheet with the equalising penalty in the first half, could hardly believe his luck when Jim Cumbes failed to gather a back-pass from Charlie Aitken. The ball trickled from the goalkeeper’s grasp and Lorimer simply stabbed the 75th minute gift over the line. “I was only following up to prevent one of Jim’s big kicks.” said an astonished Lorimer. It was a gigantic Cumbes’ kick that led to Villa taking a seventh minute lead through Leighton Phillips. Man of the match: Billy Bremner (Leeds).
