Villa sit 5th in the first division table eight points behind with four to play as Liverpool win to build an unassailable lead in the title race.
Amazingly Birmingham, and ten miles away, Coventry, at a reserve game, celebrate wildly at the news that Villa can no longer win the title.
The difference between the stations of the other midlands teams to Villa can rarely have been more vividly illustrated than on this disappointing May night.
