*The Sporting Life*

BURY V. ASTON VILLA. The old League champions paid their annual League visit to Gigg Lane Bury, on Saturday, and drew a record of 10,000 spectators. The Villa started against the sub and wind, and Settle, the home side, was soon hard at work testing Wilkes, the custodian. He could not, however, elude the wily one. The Villa attack on several occasions got going finely through grand feeding returns by Crabtree, but they found that Montgomery blocked the way most effectively. Wheldon got a nice opening from Cowan, a splendid shot just passing out. Play was stubbornly contested, the halves on each side working splendidly. The Villa now worked up. Wheldon and Johnson being foiled, and Montgomery cleared Wilkes' shot. The Villa were more methodical and dangerous, but met a stubborn defence. Settle got through a free kick, and Wilkes saved a difficult shot. Bury pressed hard, and Darroch made a brilliant shot, Wilkes holding the ball, but it screwed threw his hands and into the net after twenty-eight minutes’ play. The Villa made another attack, but Bury were the stronger now, Wilkes saving a lovely header from M'luckie, while Brimblecombe missed by inches only. Athersmith made a splendid dribble, but Montgomery cleared his shot. The Villa were busy again. Neilson showing fine defence, and play was evenly divided. Half time came round with the score Bury one. Villa nil. In the second half play was a lot more even, and some really exciting play was witnessed. The home side through a brilliant effort by Pray captured the Villa goal a second time. After a hard tussle the Midlanders succeeded in opening their account through Wheldon finishing off grand work by Devey. The game after this was hard fought, and though the Villa were wearing a bit the better of the two they could not equalise. Result—Bury, two; Villa, one.
