ON THIS DAY
Tuesday, 15 May 1979
  • Villa beat Manchester City and a shockingly bad refereeing performance on the final day to end the season in 8th place - a remarkable placing given the appalling luck and injuries Villa had suffered throughout the season.

  • Ron Saunders' 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Villa make it 🟩 fifteen wins, 🟨 sixteen draws and 🟥 eleven defeats in 🕒 forty two division one games.

  • Ron Saunders’ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 men, youthful though they often were, could at times be their own worst enemies as conceding in the early minutes and blowing leads through complacency cost Villa on numerous occasions.

  • What was clear though was that when Saunders’ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 had a fit squad to work with, this early and in some cases premature exposure to first team football, would make Villa a formidable force.

  • In the end, if that was to be the case, then this most injury ravaged seasons would have been worth it.

  • Midfiielder John Gregory 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 made his final Villa appearance aged 25 before moving on to Brighton in July 1979 for a fee of £300,000. Villa had bought Gregory for £60,000 from Northampton Town in June 1977 and he went on to play for Villa in 1977-78 and 1978-79 making 76 appearances and scoring 11 goals and returning in the late 90's as a cult hero Villa manager.

  • Right back Kenny Swain 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 makes his 25th 🕒 appearance in a Villa shirt and contributes his 10th and 11th ⚽ 🔥 goal involvements at a rate of one every 2.27 games.

  • Right back John Gidman 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 secures his 🟩 100th win in a Villa shirt on his 🕒 236th appearance.

Villa’s determined play was often interrupted by strange decisions, from Scunthorpe referee Tony Jenkins. Deehan was twice pulled back by David Watson and Colin Bell, but the referee refused to award a foul in Villa's favour. Despite these dubious rulings Villa kept up their task moving the ball about quite freely in midfield before setting up Deehan and Gary Shelton for penetrating runs into the heart of City's defence. After Villa’s first equaliser, they immediately fell behind yet again after referee Jenkins ruled that Gibson had fouled Channon just outside the area. It brought an angry response from Vila, who claimed that the referee had signalled the freekick was indirect and Mortimer was unfairly booked for dissent. *Birmingham Post* Wednesday, 16 May 1979.
