ON THIS DAY
Wednesday, 5 September 1984
Fans worst fears are realised as the rot sets in quickly under Graham Turner who presides over one of the worst ever performances seen at Villa Park.
Villa had now conceded eight without reply in two games under Turner as they slump to 11th in the early table.
Meanwhile, Herbert Douglas Ellis’ desecration of the squad continues as Des Bremner, 32, makes his final appearance in a Villa shirt before being sold to of all places Birmingham City later this month for a paltry fee of £25,000. Bremner's departure comes just two games after he was seen to be back to his best form and was moved on by Ellis, despite, and maybe because of the influence he held at Villa.
Bremner was the seventh member of the fourteen man League title winning squad that had now been forced out of the club having played for Villa between 1979-80 and 1984-85 making 221 appearances and scoring 10 goals.
Villa under Ellis had now discarded Kenny Swain, Ken McNaught, Jimmy Rimmer, David Geddis, Tony Morley, Eamonn Deacy and Bremner.
Gordon Cowans suffers his 100th defeat in a Villa shirt on his 327th appearance (312 Starts) to make it W152 D75 L100, 50 Goals and 50 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.27 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
