ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 7 September 1985
Graham Turner’s Villa play a second successive game against a neighbouring team but can't repeat their win at Albion as they fail to score for the third time in seven League matches.
Yet the game is remembered for the headlines that encapsulate the entirely lopsided relationship between Villa and their near neighbours Birmingham City.
A relationship of unequals was 100 years and counting at this point but no less virciferous than over the previous century.
Although passions were equally held on both sides, no-one, but no-one, would ever judge a Villa player on a single fixture against Birmingham. Yet the 'dream' was to beat Villa.
As an aside, the 'Blues' packed their team with ex Villa players as usual.
