MATCH QUOTES

“We were thrown off course by the early goal and several players obviously could not cope with the thought of losing a vital match. “There was obviously tension among the players and now it appears that we will not know our future until the last game of the season like last season” Graham Taylor.

FORMER Aston Villa striker Paul Rideout plunged his old club into the relegation battle with a crucial winning goal for Southampton at Villa Park last night. Southampton unbeaten in their last four games which have produced eight valuable points fully deserved their latest win. They were on their way in the first minute when Wallace opened the scoring Aston Villa boss Graham Taylor said: “We were thrown off course by the early goal and several players obviously could not cope with the thought of losing a vital match. “There was obviously tension among the players and now it appears that we will not know our future until the last game of the season like last season” Rideout’s 25th-minute goal was the result of a fine header from a cross by Matthew Le Tissier. Villa replied with an 81st minute goal from Stuart Gray his third goal in four games.
