ON THIS DAY

Saturday, 23 September 1989

  • Villa continue their difficult start to the season as they lose for the third time in seven games having won once and fall into the relegation places in the early table.

  • Villa lose to a Trevor Francis inspired QPR in a poor performance.

  • Nevertheless the condemnation from the local rag feels misplaced for a recently promoted team in their second season under one of the most talented managers around attempting to rebuild the club and with a raft of new players.

  • Ian Olney contributes his first assist in a Villa shirt on his 26th appearance (13 Starts) to make it W7 D8 L11 and 6 goals at a goal involvement per game rate of one for every 3.71 games he has played so far in his Villa career.

QUEEN'S Park Rangers' player manager Trevor Francis marked his first full League appearance of the season with a dazzling hat-trick to sink woeful Villa. Francis recalled himself after Rangers had gone 428 minutes in the First Division without a goal, and the 33-year-old former England striker rolled back the years with a vintage display of finishing. It had all started so well for Villa, who went ahead after 10 minutes when David Platt volleyed home after lan Olney had flicked on Stuart Gray's cross. Francis then took over and within five minutes ended Rangers' goal drought with a low 15-yard drive after goalkeeper Nigel Spink had parried David Bardsley's centre. On the half-hour Francis struck again with a header at the far post after Colin Clarke had flicked on Andy Sinton's corner. Then, two minutes into the second half, Francis completed Villa's day of misery with a goal of exquisite quality. He collected a clearance on the left-hand edge of the area, spotted Spink fractionally off his line, and curled a shot into the roof of the net.
