MATCH QUOTES

“We never felt that the 2-0 win at Tottenham last Wednesday would win us the championship and neither do we feel that the 3-0 defeat by Wimbledon has lost us the championship. “There will be no change to our thinking and no signs of any panic. “We will look at certain things this week but the lads have done remarkably well and one defeat does not alter what we have already achieved. “People said the bubble had burst when we lost at Norwich earlier in the season. “They said the same after Millwall and the will probably say it again now. “But we don’t want to give anybody ammunition against us by criticising the side. "We will just knuckle dews like we always do and we will certainly be determined to make a return to our winning ways for the televised game at Coventry en Sunday." "As far as we are concerned we will be working to get It out of our system this week before we go into action again." John Ward, Villa assistant manager.

TWO goals from John Fashanu destroyed Aston Villa's hopes of stretching their lead at the top of the first division. Wimbledon scored three second-half goals after Villa's David Platt had missed a fifth-minute penalty. Fashanu, returning after missing four games with an ankle injury, opened the scoring in the 57th minute when he slotted a penalty past Nigel Spink. Horsham referee Michael James had no hesitation in pointing to the spot after Derek Mountfield had bought Fashanu down. The England striker made it 2-0 in the 69th minute when he touched home a free kick from Denis Wise, to record his sixth goal in 17 games. With six minutes left Paul Miller made it three when he broke down the right, rounded Gordon Cowans and Paul McGrath before slotting home his first goal of the season. Villa should have taken the lead in the fifth minute when the referee awarded a penalty after Tony Daley had been fouled by Paul McGee. But Platt, scorer of 21 goals this season, saw his kick pushed away by goalkeeper Hans Segers.
