New boss Ron Atkinson’s first game in charge comes against the club he left to join Villa and amid an acrimonious atmosphere Villa fall two behind before Atkinson’s new signings inspire a celebrated fight back to claim victory.
Left back Steve Staunton, 22, makes a goalscoring debut after joining from Liverpool for a fee of £1,100,000 earlier in the month to become the 670th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.
Centre back, and another Villa legend to come, Shaun Teale, 27, makes his debut in a Villa shirt after signing from AFC Bournemouth for £300,000 in July 1991 to become the 671st player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.
Midfielder Paul Mortimer, 23, makes his debut in a Villa shirt after moving from Charlton Athletic for £350,000 to become the 672nd player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.
