  • Villa extend their winless run to 3 League games under Ron Atkinson as tempers flare after controversial referee George Courtney hands Wednesday the winner amidst angry remonstrations.

  • Villa ‘keeper Les Sealey needs to be restrained from the County Durham official who has been dogged about curious decisions for many seasons.

  • Sealey, a temperamental player at the best of times, is heavily criticised for his lack of constraint but it’s unlikely it’s the first time players have felt the need to confront Courtney over the years.

  • Midfielder Matthias Breitkreutz, 20, makes his debut in a Villa shirt after joining from PFV Bergmann-Borsig for a fee of £100,000 in October 1991 to become the 686th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

  • Dwight Yorke makes his 50th appearance in a Villa shirt (35 Starts) to make it W18 D13 L19, 13 Goals, 8 Assists and 1 Booking at a goal involvement rate of one for every 2.38 games he has played so far in his Villa career.

  • Steve Staunton makes his 25th appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W11 D6 L8, 2 Goals and 3 Assists so far in his Villa career.

MATCH QUOTES

“It was such an innocuous header [Jemson’s goal] that there shouldn’t have been any debate. “But whether the ball was over the line or not - and even TV pictures haven’t proved anything - it was the first goal Les has conceded in four matches. “What he [Les Sealey] did was unprofessional, and he knows what I think. “It was so unnecessary, that’s what annoys me.” Ron Atkinson.

SHOWING no signs of their humiliation at the hands of Leeds last week, Wednesday showed great fighting spirit, and were full value for their win against a lacklustre Villa. Villa, unchanged after their midweek FA Cup win at Tottenham, struggled to escape Wednesday's close markings and it was not until the 19th minute that they stoked up some pressure. Chris Woods pushed away an inswinging corner from Steve Staunton. Then, a second flag kick delivered this time by Kevin Richardson, was deflected onto the bar by the England goalkeeper. Villa created their first real chance when top scorer Dwight Yorke had one shot deflected for a corner and then missed the target from an even better position. Wednesday defended stubbornly and almost snatched the lead in the 44th minute when Nigel Jemson's close-rang shot rebounded off the bar. Villa's manager was given a stormy reception by Wednesday supporters when he took his place in the dug-out for the second half. Villa then put together one of their best moves so far but a timely interception by King prevented Yorke from reaching a deep centre from Tony Daley. In the 78th minute Les Sealey seemed to have saved a header from Nigel Jemson. but a linesman ruled he had carried the ball over the line to give Wednesday a lead they deserved -- and held to the end of a torrid game, with Sealey fortunate to escape being sent-off following his protests. Sealey had to be dragged away from referee George Courtney after the controversial late winner at Villa Park.
