MATCH QUOTES

“We have a decent side. “We knew it would not be easy playing against Wimbledon. “With our contrasting styles we said we had got to be brave enough to come and play the match our way. “There is a long way to go - a million miles for anybody.” Ron Atkinson. “It was an absolutely fantastic goal - as good as you will ever see. “A Wimbledon steward said to me 'I don’t mind standing in the rain to watch stuff like that’.” Jim Barron.

*Birmingham Evening Mail*

ONE of the goals of the season from Dalian Atkinson and two from Dean Saunders kept Aston Villa rolling towards the top of the table. Wimbledon were threatening to equalise when Atkinson picked up the ball 10 yards inside his own half. He shrugged off three tackles on his way to goal and finished with an inch perfect chip over Hans Segers. Saunders had taken his tally to six in four League games since leaving Liverpool for Villa. In the sixth minute he was unmarked at the far post to slide home Steve Froggat's cross and on the half-hour, after a neat one-two with Ray Houghton, he neatly beat Segers.
