MATCH QUOTES

"It was one of those occasions when the ball bounced perfectly. "I was able to drill it in perfectly, and from the moment I hit the ball, I knew it was a goal. “A nice thrill, but I was hoping it would prove to be a winner. "I suppose a 1-1 draw was a fair result, and its a nice feeling to be where we are. “But we have never made any predictions about the championship." Steve Staunton. “I’m just happy with nine games to go we are in the pot. “Before the game I thought it would be crap because of all the build up and all the hype but I think it was a superb game. “You saw a lot of top players out there struggling to get their breath because of the tempo of the game. “We were well worth a point. “We had to withstand pressure but we were brave enough to come out and play attacking football when we had the chance.” Ron Atkinson. “If you can be disciplined in Australia you can be disciplined anywhere. “There’s a real danger you can over do it and there were times when I got very low. “I couldn’t imagine being back here at Old Trafford playing for another team especially one that is doing so well. “My form has been good and I’m just happy to be in the team behind such a great defence.” Mark Bosnich.

MANCHESTER UNITED and Aston Villa played themselves into the hearts of the nation yesterday, but also into the hands of Norwich City. Wonderful as this spectacle was, the result at Old Trafford possibly benefited the outsiders from East Anglia more than these two principal contenders for the title. Neither deserved to lose a riveting contest but the draw means that Norwich, to whom both United and Villa have still to travel, are now only two points behind in what was considered a two-horse race until a few days ago. STEVE STAUNTON'S wonder goal yesterday was not enough to nose Villa ahead in the tense dogfight for the English Premier League title. Staunton's goal driven into the top corner from 23 yards looked likely to be the only goal at Old Trafford. "It was one of those occasions when the ball bounced perfectly," said Staunton. "I was able to drill it in perfectly, and from the moment I hit the ball, I knew it was a goal. A nice thrill, but I was hoping it would prove to be a winner." "I suppose a 1-1 draw was a fair result, and its a nice feeling to be where we are. But we have never made any predictions about the championship."
