ON THIS DAY

Wednesday, 3 May 1995

  • Villa stop a run of 3 defeats under Brian Little but are held at home by Manchester City to remain 18th in the table.

  • It could have been worse though as a refereeing blunder sees Ugo Ehiogu puts Brian Little's side ahead with his hand.

  • Villa now have 1 win in their last 11 Premier League fixtures under Brian Little.

  • Villa are 2 points ahead of third from bottom Palace with two games to play.

  • Ugo Ehiogu contributes his 5th goal involvement in a Villa shirt on his 80th appearance (66 Starts) to make it W30 D20 L30, 4 Goals, 1 Assist, 9 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.

  • Shaun Teale contributes his third assist in a Villa shirt and collects his 20th yellow card on his 179th appearance (178 Starts) to make it W77 D49 L53, 5 Goals, 3 Assists, 20 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.

  • Remarkably, former Villa ‘keeper John Burridge lines up for Manchester City. Burridge left Villa in 1978 aged 26 and is still playing regular first team football 17 years later.

'Hand of Ehiogu' fails to inspire Villa ASTON VILLA are still deep in relegation trouble after failing to capitalise on a drought-breaking goal from the 'Hand of Ehiogu' against Manchester City at Villa Park last night. Ugo Ehiogu came to Villa's rescue in Diego Maradona fashion as he succeeded where his attacking colleagues have failed, becoming the first Villa player to score in 12 hours and 59 minutes of football since Andy Townsend netted at Newcastle on February 25. The breakthrough came after nine minutes, when Steve Staunton, having played a one-two from a corner with Dwight Yorke, crossed the ball superbly to the near post, where Shaun Teale stooped to send a diving header looping goalwards. Ehiogu seemed to use a hand to bundle the ball past John Burridge but that didn't matter to Villa's delighted fans. However, delight was replaced by despair when City equalised in 63 minutes. Shaun Teale was unable to deter Niall Quinn down the right wing, and the Republic of Ireland striker sent over a tantalising low centre, from which Uwe Rosier scored, despite managing only half a connection. Villa are now just two points ahead of Crystal Palace.
