  • Villa secure a goalless draw in Sweden but Helsingborgs but it’s not enough as the Swedes win the tie on away goals thanks to their draw at Villa Park 2 weeks earlier to knock Villa out of the UEFA Cup in the 1st Round.

  • Legendary Villa centre half Paul McGrath, 36, makes his 324th and final appearance in a Villa shirt (316 Starts) before moving on to Derby County in October 1996. McGrath played for Villa between 1989-90 and 1996-97 to record W138 D85 L101, 10 Goals, 9 Assists and 18 Bookings across his Villa career but unfortunately mere statistics simply cannot do the player justice. Undoubtedly the greatest player to put on the claret and blue, anyone who had the honour of watching him in a Villa (or Republic of Ireland) shirt will have a tale to tell of McGrath moments, believe them all, he really was that good.

  • Dwight Yorke’s goalless run extends to 12 games in all competitions - his worst goalscoring return since a 12 game spell to December 1994 - to make it 212 Appearances, 172 Starts, W91 D56 L65, 62 Goals, 32 Assists and 2 Bookings at a goal per game rate of one for every 3.42 games he has played so far in his Villa career.

  • Michael Oakes makes his 10th appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W4 D5 L1, 6 Goals Conceded at a rate of 0.60 goals per game and 6 Clean Sheets (60%) so far in his Villa career.

In the end Peter Wibran’s late goal for Helsingborgs in the 1-1 draw at Villa Park a fortnight ago effectively decided the issue. The match was almost a replica of the first encounter, with Villa dominating for lengthy periods but failing to break down their gallant opponents. Brian Little became increasingly desperate and on the hour decided to change his tactics, pushing central defender Ugo Ehiogu into attack and replacing him at the back with Paul McGrath as Fernando Nelson was substituted.
