FOOTBALL MATCHES PLAYED SATURDAY. NOTTS v. ASTON VILLA. — ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP. These clubs met in the fourth round at the Trent Bridge Ground, Nottingham, before upwards of 4,000 spectators, when the visiting team won by three goals to one. Play began very late, the ball not being set in motion until twenty minutes to four o'clock. Aston Villa kicked off in the direction of the Bridgford goal, and a foul was early given to Nottingham in their own territory. A. W. Cursham made for the latter a very pretty run on the right, but in middling none of his confreres came to his support, and as a result the visitors on the left threatened considerable danger, the ball, in fact, being shot over the Notts barrier. A throw-in to Aston succeeded, and, after six minutes’ hot work, Andy Hunter on the right succeeded in drawn “first blood” on their behalf. On resuming, H. Cursham on the left transferred the ball into Birmingham quarters, and out of a clever middle his brother Charles was instrumental, amid loud applause, in equalising matters. The play was very fast, and another capital break away by H. Cursham met with well-deserved recognition. The Aston forwards were also conspicuous, and for a time it was difficult say who shone in the ascendant. Attacks on both sides were vigorously repulsed, until “a corner” by Aston appeared to cause some uneasiness in the Notts ranks. After half-time the visitors forged ahead; a second goal, kicked by Andy Hunter, was followed by a third and last from the foot of his brother.
