ON THIS DAY

Saturday, 23 April 2016

  • Villa lose for the 25th time in 35 Premier League games.

  • Eric Black loses his fourth consecutive game in charge as caretaker manager.

  • Villa make it 10 consecutive defeats for the first time since 1962-63 under Joe Mercer and for only the second time in the club’s history.

  • Villa have now lost 26 of their last 41 Games.

  • Leandro Bacuna suffers his 50th defeat in a Villa shirt on his 96th appearance (74 Starts) to make it W27 D19 L50, 6 Goals, 6 Assists and 16 Bookings so far in his Villa career.

  • Goalkeeper Brad Guzan makes his 171st and final appearance in a Villa shirt (160 Starts) aged 31 before moving on to Middlesbrough on a free transfer in July 2016. Guzan had been with the club since 2008 after joining from Club Deportivo Chivas USA for a fee of £900,000 and was released by the club in 2012 having failed to make the grade. At that point Guzan's Villa record was Played 30 (28 Starts), W15 D4 L11, 35 Goals Conceded, 8 Clean Sheets, 1.20 Goals per Game and 2 Bookings. Guzan had made 2 substitute appearances in the Premier League across 3 seasons before a run of 6 League starts in the absence of Shay Given in which he returned figures of W2 D1 L4, 9 Goals conceded and 2 Clean Sheets. Incredibly Paul Lambert brought Guzan back to the club and installed him as first choice despite his limitations, a period that coincided with Villa’s worst run of seasons in decades. Guzan's final tally was a breathtaking W47 D36 L88, 1 Assist, 273 Goals Conceded, 36 Clean Sheets, 1.67 League Goals per Game and 9 Bookings.

  • Centre back Kevin Toner contributes his first assist on his Villa debut aged 19 after joining from Home Farm in July 2012 and becomes the 888th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

  • Ashley Westwood scores his 5th goal in a Villa shirt on his 136th appearance (130 Starts) to make it W37 D27 L72, 5 Goals, 11 Assists and 24 Bookings so far in his Villa career.

  • Joleon Lescott loses for the twentieth time in twenty seven league games in a Villa shirt on his 28th appearance for the club to make it W3 D5 L20, 1 Goal and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career.

  • Eric Black reveals that Jores Okore has refused to play for Villa again

  • Meanwhile in much happier news, Stiliyan Petrov announces his desire to return to football with Villa, four years after his leukaemia diagnosis.

MATCH QUOTES

“I have decided to start trying to play football again at a higher level again, “Aston Villa remains my priority. “I am very excited. People will be asking a lot of questions, and will have a lot of doubts. “I always believe that if you work hard, you will get fitter. “My fitness is getting close to when I retired, so let’s see where we go.” Stiliyan Petrov on his potential return to professional football. “It wasn’t a disagreement. I spoke to Jores the week beginning the Bournemouth game [which took place on 9 April] and I thought he responded well and thought he trained extremely well. “But once I named the XI on the Friday, which I normally do to try and get more detail into them, Jores asked to see me and said that he didn’t want to be considered to be on the bench, which I found surprising but that was his decision. “So I then withdrew him from the squad. I met him again on the Monday and asked if he had considered his position over the weekend. At that point, he said he didn’t want to be considered for any games going forward. And at that point I really didn’t have a choice apart from remove him. “I don’t want people who don’t want to be at Aston Villa and playing at Aston Villa, certainly under the circumstances, and the Bournemouth game was a massive game for us. So he has gone to the under-21s and that’s what happens. “I am surprised from a young or an old player, but Jores will have his own thoughts on that and I have my thoughts on it. We have come to a conclusion.” Eric Black on Jores Okore. “I write to Villa supporters to make clear that this relegation lies at my feet and no one else’s. “How many seasons after all can one hold on and hope to slide through? That is not Aston Villa. That kind of desperate existence is totally unacceptable, unbearable and totally incompatible with Villa’s glorious past. “That is not what, or why, I looked to get involved back then and it is why I’ve looked for some time to make a change. I can say certainly in good faith that I have tried to sell since my May 2014 announcement and put our beloved club in better suited hands – but that hasn’t happened. “I believe in Aston Villa and know it will come back stronger and more able, with love and care for the community it serves. I will continue to try to put the club into worthy hands and also do my best to position Villa for the quickest possible return to its rightful place among England’s elite.” Randy Lerner on relegation. “We created more chances. We had two or three chances, and if we’d taken them, we might have got something. But if we have to score five goals at home to win a game, then we’re going to be in for a tough challenge. We did get a response under difficult circumstances, but it wasn’t enough to win the game. “We conceded poor goals that put us on the back foot. There was a response, and credit for that, but on the day it wasn’t enough. “The fans are entitled to vent their displeasure. It’s not an ideal atmosphere, but it’s understandable, given the circumstances. We have to continue to be professional.” Eric Black, Saturday, 23 April 2016.

Saturday, 23 April 2016

Southampton boosted their top-six hopes with a 4-2 win at already-relegated Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday. Saints were ahead on 15 minutes through Shane Long’s close-range header, before Long put the ball on a plate for Dusan Tadic to make it 2-0 with six minutes to go in the first half. Ashley Westwood gave Villa a lifeline just before the break with a cool finish from inside the area, but Tadic added Saints’ third with 20 minutes remaining with a deflected effort from just outside the area. Westwood halved the deficit once again with a low effort into the bottom corner from 15 yards to set up a nervous ending, but substitute Sadio Mane’s header made it four in stoppage time. The result leaves Southampton in eighth, two points off sixth-placed West Ham. Villa - now a game away from equalling their club record losing streak of 11 from1962-63 -made two changes from the side that lost 1-0 at Manchester United last Saturday, while Saints made four and gave a start to striker Jay Rodriguez, his first in the Premier League since September. It was Long, another of those replacements, who caused the problems early on, hitting the bar from 10 yards after getting the better of Joleon Lescott, who bore the brunt of the Villa fans’ anger. “You’re not fit to wear the shirt” rang out at Villa Park, and the home fans soon saw their side go one down thanks to former West Brom striker Long, who headed home unmarked from six yards after Ryan Bertrand’s superb left-wing ball. Villa went close at the other end through Leandro Bacuna, who headed wide from Westwood’s cross from the right, before Saints hit the woodwork again through Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman cut inside in the area and drilled an effort towards the near post. Westwood’s close-range effort fell into the grateful hands of Fraser Forster moments later, but it was 2-0 to Southampton on 39 minutes thanks to Tadic’s simple finish. Long looked to round Brad Guzan after easily beating Lescott with pace, and despite the goalkeeper getting a touch on the ball, the Irishman composed himself to centre for Tadic, who slotted past Lescott on the line. Villa halved the deficit on the stroke of half-time through Westwood, whose half-volley from 12 yards found the bottom left corner after the ball broke to him kindly from the left. Guzan stood tall to deny Long just before the hour mark after Tadic’s superb through ball, and it was the Serbian midfielder who scored Saints’ third with a low deflected effort off the boot of Westwood from just outside the area. Long poked the ball over the bar from close range with 10 minutes remaining after Guzan’s fumble in the area, but Villa produced a nervous finish after Westwood’s fine finish into the bottom right corner from 15 yards with five minutes remaining. But Tadic worked his magic again at the other end as Saints killed the game in injury time, laying the ball off for Cedric Soares on the right byline, before his lofted ball was headed into the bottom corner by Mane.
