MATCH TIMELINE

Sunday, 29 September 2024

🗒️ | 3’ Since kick off Ipswich haven’t touched the ball as Villa make pretty shapes in the opposition half before Tielemans shoots a dipping shot over
🗒️ | 5’ Still all Villa but poessession is now further back
🗒️ | 6’ Kalvin Phillips falls over and Amadou Onana is punished triggering Ipswich’s first goal, poor refereeing by Attwell even before the ultimate punishment
🥅 | 7’ Goal, 0-1, (Ipswich Town), Rory Delap. Amazingly Villa fall behind yet again but Emiliano Martínez probably shouild have done better at his near post
🗒️ | 11’ Still all Villa posession since the goal before Torres goes down in the area from a faliling Ipswich defensive arm
🗒️ | 13’ Still all Villa as Watkins is barged off the ball in the penalty area…. old fashioned but usually a liability these days
❗ | 14’ Chance! Pinball in the box after a poor defensive clearance and Villa have a chance….
⚽ | 14’ Goal!, 1-1, Morgan Rogers, Assist by Ollie Watkins
🗒️ | 16’ Villa are facing yet another team that niggle away, shirt pulls, stray elbows, kicks and then go down way too easily under legitimate challenges
🗒️ | 17’ A really strong cross in from Ipswich, they are looking stronger and more connected than the firat 15’ but Villa are still dominating possession and the patterns
🗒️ | 21’ More Ipswich play around the Villa box but it goes nowhere as Villa break and Watkins is cycically brought down on the touch line to prevent a breakway, free kick but no action from referee Attwell
🗒️ | 22’ Youri Tielemans is punished for an offence that really wasn’t, Tielemans had been remonstrating with Attwell earlier about his awareness
🗒️ | 24’ A ridiculous push on Tielemans 30 yards out right in front of the refereee, a free kick, no caution and you get the feeling Ipswich are getting bolder in their challenges because of it
🗒️ | 25’ No free kick for Rogers despite being brought down in a comming together before he is immediately punished for running across a player’s path who hits the ground
🗒️ | 26’ What could have been a lovely move is squandered by a stray midfield pass with spaces wide open for Villa to attack
🗒️ | 28’ Villa playing it around the Ipswich box again but no openings
🗒️ | 29’ Incidentally the hoardings around Portman Road read like diseases ‘HALOITSM’ ‘HALOCRM’ ‘HALOPSA’ …there’s a brand marketeer somewhere that needs sacking
🗒️ | 30’ Still all Villa but Ipswich are proving adept at interrupting flow with last ditch legs
🗒️ | 31’ A first bit of wingplay from Leon Bailey sees him receive the ball back and the chance to deliver a teasing cross….
⚽ | 32’ Goal!, 2-1, Ollie Watkins, Assist by Leon Bailey. A perfect cross from Bailey is straight onto Watkins’ head and Villa lead.
🗒️ | 34’ Diego Carlos is penalised and Ipswich have a free kick on the edge of the area, it’s cleared to Kalvin Phillips outside the box and Martínez puts it behind at full stretch
🗒️ | 36’ Leon Bailey is bundled to the floor in front of the referee but it takes an age for Attwell to award the free kick
🗒️ | 37’ Martínez saves Villa with an excellent save from the onrushing Delap an attack brought about by some strangely short play in the middle of the park from Villa.
🗒️ | 38’ A purely natural leverage elbow from Watkins catches an Ipswich defender prompting a strong taking to from the referee
🗒️ | 40’ A long ball into the box is just too far in front of Watkins as the ‘keeper collects
🗒️ | 42’ Ipswich win a corner and fair play to the home team, as an attacking team they aren’t awful
🚑 | 42’ Martínez is caught in the face by an Ipswich defender as he collects the ball and is down
🗒️ | 44’ Checks over, Martínez can continue for now, the ball starts with Ipswich in possession in their own half
🗒️ | 45’ Rogers is maimed in midfield and the referee appears not to notice as Villa attack before Ipswich break it up
🟨 | 47’ Rogers is fouled badly, poorly and obviously twice in succession and is clearly frustrated as Attwell finally brings out a card, then another
🕒 | 45’+3 HT Ipswich Town 1-2 Aston Villa
🗒️ | 46’ Villa on the attack immediately before a cut back doesn’t come off and Lucas Digne fouls his opponent, Attwell awards a free kick and takes no action before Ogbene of Ipswich ‘asks’ hims to book Digne and he dutifully does, crazy.
🟨 | 46’ Booking, Lucas Digne, Bad Foul
🗒️ | 48’ Villa’s passing is just a little too long for each other in these early stages of the second half before some lucky ricochets keep Ipswich a threat ahead of excellent and clever defending from Diego Carlos
🗒️ | 50’ Play is very much more subdued at the start of this secoind half as Sam Morsy has the cheek to complain he was fouled. Another stray foot in stymies a Villa build but they regain possession before Ollie Watkins is brought down and the referee ignores it again.
🗒️ | 52’ A loose ball sets Villa free but they cannot make anything of it as Morgan Rogers strikes a really frsutrated figure given his lack of protection from the referee
🟨 | 53’ Ipswich break down the left and another excellent cross is put behind for a corner, Martínez sets Villa away before ex Villa man Tuanzebe scythes down Tielemans in full flow with another stray leg and is deservedly booked
🗒️ | 56’ Villa need to up the momentum right now, Ipswich are there for the taking but there’s no doubt that they are a cohesive attacking threat at times, and clearly build on confidence
🗒️ | 57’ Sam Morsy treads on the back of Tielemans’ ankle and should be off, no action from Attwell
🗒️ | 59’ Villa desperately need a third here so they can play with full fluidity as the Portman Road crowd embarrass themselves calling for a handball on Digne’s midriff…. just as well we’re not in Switzerland
🗒️ | 60’ Fabulous play from Rogers in the middle of the park keeps Villa moving
🗒️ | 62’ Villa playing keep ball again before a stray pass goes straight to the ‘keeper and momentum is lost
🔁 | 64’ Sub off, Morgan Rogers, Sub on, Jhon Durán
🔁 | 64’ Sub off, Leon Bailey, Sub on, Jaden Philogene-Bidace
🗒️ | 66’ More excellent defending from Diego Carlos but Villa need to be far more forceful going forward, they have become quite passive allowing Ipswich to settle
🗒️ | 70’ Well this was coming, another poor challenge from Sam Morsy treading on Philogene’s boot, Attwell seems transfixed and unable to move before blowing for a free kick a good 5 seconds after the challenge, no second yellow, no VAR check, this is normally the point that Attwell’s officiating plummets into total incompetence
🥅 | 72’ Goal, 2-2, (Ipswich Town), Rory Delap. Villa pegged back and they only have themselves to blame. Very poor approach this second half.
🗒️ | 73’ A foot up late challenge on Durán earns Ipswich another yellow card before Ramsey has a stray attempt to put Villa back ahead
🗒️ | 74’ Receiving a knee in the back and Philogene is punished, madness
🗒️ | 76’ There really does look like there will only be one winner now and sadly that’s the home side, Villa are out of ideas, it’s always been a bogey ground this
🗒️ | 78’ Too easy for Ipswich as they regain possession from an aimless Villa long ball
🗒️ | 79’ Villa finally mount an attack but it’s cleared no nonsense into row z
🗒️ | 80’ A desperate, desperate last ditch tackle from Torres prevents Ipswich from going ahead, Villa are in real trouble here
🗒️ | 82’ Villa play it around the box and Durán is fouled right on the edge of the penalty area
🔁 | 83’ Sub off, Youri Tielemans, Sub on, Ross Barkley
🔁 | 83’ Sub off, Ollie Watkins, Sub on, Emiliano Buendía
🔁 | 83’ Sub off, Lucas Digne, Sub on, Ian Maatsen
🗒️ | 85’ The free kick is finally taken by Buendía and it is hopeless
🗒️ | 87’ Villa give the ball away allowing Ipswich to break but regain posession and work it to Philogene but again it’s so easy for Ipswich to win the ball back before Ross Barkley shoots from distance and the ‘keeper makes a comfortable save.
🗒️ | 89’ Ipswich are hoofing it clear now but it only needs to take one lucky bounce and they will be in, such a poor second half from Villa, Bayern Munich is no excuse
🗒️ | 90’+2 All Ipswich, all around Villa’s box, two corners in succession and Villa make a total hash of it to concede a third.
🗒️ | 90’+5 Villa get more than they deserved as the final whistle goes and yet again Villa get stage fright as they are about to clinch top spot.

🆘 : It probably seems churlish to award Attwell poor because after all that’s his default position but yet again he proves to be the equal in incompetence to anyone on the current refereeing circuit. How Sam Morsy was not dismissed is bewildering and why Attwell failed to stamp control on the game by issuing early, deserved yellow cards to a host of Ipswich players is mindboggling. That Attwell fails to do what is right is certainly nothing new but his complete inability to run a game is still incredible. Would Villa have beaten 10 men? That’s not the issue. Competent officiating is.

TEAM STATS

Leon Bailey comes in for John McGinn in a formation jig about as the youngsters from Tuesday other than Bogarde and Swinkels miss out.

Lucas Digne returns from injury but, although the Frenchman doesn't deserve to be dropped, spare a thought for Ian Maatsen who still awaits his League debut despite excellent showings at left back.

MATCH QUOTES

“[We are] thinking only the next match is Ipswich. ”I can repeat from the beginning of pre-season how important every match is because the last two years, we got the Europa Conference League after being one point difference to Brentford. Then it was two points different with Tottenham and we are playing for these points every match. "At the end of the season, we don't want to remind ourselves of some moments where we weren't focused for some points. Only Ipswich Town and focusing a lot. Not thinking about the next match or next week. "They are playing really well. Not getting points like they deserve, but they are competitive and they play very well. They played well against Liverpool and Fulham. "I expect them to play very well on Sunday and we have to compete to adapt to them. They are aggressive in high press aggressive in duels. They have very good structure to play in combinations with the players they have. The goalkeeper is playing very well and we have to respect them. "The coach is doing amazing in his work. Tactically they are showing a very good structure. I am analysing deeply their structure for Sunday. “[Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara] are training very well, They started to be 100 per cent completely training with us last week. The plan with them is to try and start playing with under-21s next week for 45 minutes. After the break they will be available if everything goes well. "The technology is always welcome and with VAR they are trying to improve it. I believe in VAR and with everything they are trying to add, increasing and being better. "Every match we are playing has been a different plan. The game plan is to adapt and impose our game plan. Ipswich is different and difficult, like the matches we are playing. We are trying to build a team and get stronger tactically with players. Some are in the process. "We want to increase our level individually and collectively and it is being positive because we are getting points in this way. But of course we have to improve a lot of things. "The match against Wolves was very good to analyse deeply. Sometimes we are winning but we are needing to change something to get the result we want. "Jhon Durán is involving and focusing like I want and he is playing with strong impact. Playing like he did on Tuesday, he played fantastic for 90 mins in the Carabao Cup match. "My challenge is to get best of him as a striker, playing with Watkins as well. The idea is to play more together. We will get performances individually and collectively with both players. "He's a good guy. He is young, he is impatient sometimes because he wants everything so quick. Now he is focusing 100 per cent same as me. He is following our idea and my plan with him. We started working together almost two years ago in the January. "The progress and responsibility I have with him is a huge responsibility because I believe in him. But, of course, sometimes going up sometimes down. "Sometimes he's strong, sometimes he's not playing every minute he is expecting. Now, I think this is his best moment, his commitment and behaviour. He is following everything tactically which I want from him. "He is working every day like other players. The most important thing is for him to be in the squad and then his quality and potential ... I can't tell you now how much potential he has. It is not fixed. Hopefully we can get of him his potential here. “[John McGinn’s]] been out for one week and I think he will now be out for two or three weeks more. "Our expectation is that he will be out for three or four weeks altogether. "When someone is injured it is not good for the players and for us. ”But analysing his performances before he was injured he needed to improve and increase his performance levels. We were working with him on his focus. "Now he is injured we must stay calm and work to recover as soon as possible - and hopefully we can work on the things he was not doing like he has been doing for the last two years. Trying to fit better into the system and getting better performances from him and the team when he comes back. "We have our challenges and it is to be competitive in the Premier League and keep the same consistency that we had last year. ”Then we had our experiences last year in the Conference League getting the performances we needed. Of course, the Champions League is more difficult but the experiences we had are similar. "I will try to be competitive. On Sunday, against Ipswich, then against Bayern Munich. On Tuesday, we were competitive in the Carabao Cup and we won. This is the way. "Each match is a challenge. Each competition is a challenge. To be competitive in different competitions and to be contenders, to get something through the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Premier League. The first objective is through the Premier League." Unai Emery pre-match. "100% the way we played we kind of fell into their hands. “It was end to end and that’s what they wanted and they caught us on the transition a couple of times. "We had a lot of opportunities but we didn’t get the final pass right, I am included in that. We could have seen the game out after my goal. "They always put a lot of pressure on us and we couldn't really implement our game plan. Ipswich were always on to us and it was a bit of a basketball game which is what they wanted but we didn't. "It was a difficult game and I think a point is a fair result. We didn't get it right in the final third, we could have been more ruthless myself included. "A point is a fair result but disappointing because there were a lot of opportunities for us. They kept putting pressure on us, they're here at home, they made runs in behind and we grinded the result out in the end. "Everybody is ready [for Bayern Munich], there's a buzz around the club. Last year was special and this will be even better this year in the Champions League. You want to play in the best games in the world." Ollie Watkins post-match. "The result is fair and we are in a process as a team working out how we can build strongly our tactics and mentality with some new players getting progressively better. ”More or less, my thoughts are that one match like, after the first half, we came back the result and controlled the match like we planned. "When teams play at home they are pushing and more or less demanding more from us, focus and tactically defensively and offensively. We need to control the game again like we didn’t do in the second half. "The result was fair and we could have even lost the match in the end. I am accepting the point, but in the way I want to raise our level and demands, I accept it in our process. "Overall we have 13 points, but today we were as well optimistic about the possibility to get to Liverpool with 15 points. We can accept how difficult this league is and playing away, playing against a team like Ipswich who are excited and have a good structure tactically. "They are playing with confidence and this is the difficulty we faced today in 90 minutes. In the first half we played even better than I had planned to stop their game plan and their capacity to push us. "In the second half they played like I thought they would in the second half. Of course, in this moment we needed to be stronger than we were. "For example, we conceded 10 corners and how is the question. We didn’t control the ball and our positioning to stop them to get to our box. They didn’t score through corners, but it showed we didn’t have control. "We started the first half very well, we came back and we controlled the game really well. But in the second half they were pushing. "They did it, they scored, because we couldn't control like we wanted "It was a pretty good match and I think the draw was fair. We were better in the first half, the second half we lost our concentration and the consequences happened because they scored and they could have scored one more. "We had our chances but we conceded more than normal and we didn’t control things like we did in the first half. I am not happy with the point but I have to accept it because I think it is fair. "They had their game plan of course when they scored it was a surprise because we started well. I wanted us to finish strongly and oppose and we didn’t do that." Unai Emery post-match. "We are going to suspend the match on Wednesday and we are not going to play. “What do we want? We want to play in Europe. We want to get the same level like other teams like City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Newcastle and Tottenham. "If we don’t want it then we don’t play in Europe and we rest in the week. Fantastic for everybody. It is the challenge we have. The players, myself, the supporters, even the journalists! "We are going to be tired, this is the level. Man City played at this level for 10 years, Liverpool for 20 years. If we don’t want to play at this level, then we don’t play in Europe and we will be comfortable playing for the top 10. "This is our challenge and my demands as well. On Wednesday we are going to be fantastic." Unai Emery on Villa’s busy schedule.
