MATCH TIMELINE
Wednesday, 9 April 2025

↔️ | 3’ Very high and very wide from Ousmane Dembélé
⛔ | 6’ Easy save from a Vitinha shot for Emi Martínez
⛔ | 9’ Save from Martínez for Dembélé’s shot after Kvaratskhelia tangles in the box with Boubacar
🗒️ | 12’ All PSG but no huge threat yet
❗ | 14’ First Villa attack as Youri Tielemans delivers the ball in and Donnarumma flaps unconvincingly and PSG scramble it away
⛔ | 16’ Save from Martínez as Hakimi breaks through, referee Mariani awards a goal kick rather than the corner it was
🟨 | 17’ Booking, Matty Cash, another foul on Kvaratskhelia ends in a caution
⛔ | 18’ Save from Martínez as Hakimi fires in from the resultant free kick
💥 | 20’ Lucas Digne clatters Désiré Doué, Cash’s card won’t be the last of the night for Villa
🗒️ | 23’ Morgan Rogers breaks forward and passes to Marcus Rashford but PSG snuff it out
↔️ | 23’ Vitinha curls one in but it’s over despite Emi Martínez’s acrobatics
🚑 | 23’ Jacob Ramsey down, surely he’s not injured again
🚑 | 25’ Jacob Ramsey continues
🗒️ | 25’ Still all PSG but one Villa attack shows they can be picked off if they’re contained, Villa are living on the edge though
❗ | 25’ Chance! John McGinn wide over from well outside the box
⛔ | 27’ Good block prevents Nuno Mendes shot troubling Martínez
🗒️ | 30’ The PSG full backs are running this, two clever managers facing off here, but still there hasn’t been that huge chance that probably would have been expected by now, Villa need to keep their discipline for Unai to readjust at the break
🗒️ | 32’ Villa with their first spell of possession but it is all very moderated, no gung ho football here
⚽ | 35’ Goal, 1-0, Morgan Rogers, Assist by Youri Tielemans
🗒️ | Villa score from their second real attack as they hit PSG on the break just as has been done to Emery’s side this season, John McGinn is the star as his midfield strength takes hold of play and sets Youri off
💥 | 39’ A PSG corner and Emi Martínez does a Donnarumma and flaps but Villa get it away
🥅 | 39’ Goal, 1-1, (Paris Saint Germain), Désiré Doué
🗒️ | Martínez beaten by a once in a million shot from Doué, really bad luck for that to come in a game like this, all stemming from Martínez’s flap
⛔ | 44’ Another Doué shot and Martínez fumbles again, he’s looking falliable
↔️ | 44’ Doué again, this time over
↔️ | 45’+1 Doué again, this time it’s blocked… that’s the problem with a wonder goal, it changes your entire mindset, Villa need to get in level, adjust and refocus
🕒 | 45’+2 Paris Saint Germain 1-1 Aston Villa
🗒️ | A wobbly end to a very well managed first half, all square only because of a wonder strike
🔁 | 46’ Sub off, Matty Cash, Sub on, Axel Disasi
⛔ | 47’ Dembélé shot blocked
⛔ | 48’ Dembélé shot blocked again
🥅 | 49’ Goal, 1-2, (Paris Saint Germain), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
🗒️ | A fast break does for Villa just as it did for PSG, Disasi wasn’t quite on it and Martínez probably didn’t react as well as we know he can but it’s another crazily good goal
⛔ | 56’ Kvaratskhelia shot blocked
↔️ | 56’ Pacho heads over from a PSG corner
🗒️ | To stay in the tie would be some achievement from here, home advantage, an expensive squad but more importantly pacy, direct running - the antithesis of Pep-ball - is running Villa ragged
⛔ | 58’ An excellent save from Emi Martínez, without doubt his best of the night, thwarts Hakimi
🔁 | 59’ Sub off, Jacob Ramsey, Sub on, Marco Asensio
🗒️ | A bit surprised at that sub, risks a looser midfield set up….
🆘 | Ridiculous penalty appeal from PSG, no need for that, Disasi - who has been targeted since coming on - is on the ground as the ball hits his arm and he’s unable to move… they’re better than that
⛔ | 66’ Emi Martínez saves from centre back Lucas Beraldo
🗒️ | 70’ gone, one goal down, Villa would take this all day long
❗ | 72’ Chance! A rare Villa attack and Donnarumma saves Morgan Rogers shot from John McGinn’s ball
🗒️ | 75’ Apart from an offside strike PSG have had a quiet 15’
⛔ | 75’ Kvaratskhelia shot blocked
🆘 | Another Ridiculous penalty appeal from PSG as Kvaratskhelia runs into Pau Torres and falls over, not a great look that
🗒️ | 80’ PSG winning successive corners
🔁 | 79’ Sub off, Marcus Rashford, Sub on, Ollie Watkins
🔁 | 80’ Sub off, John McGinn, Sub on, Amadou Onana
🔁 | 80’ Sub off, Youri Tielemans, Sub on, Ian Maatsen
❗ | 81’ Chance! Marco Asensio deflected wide from Amadou Onana’s pass
❗ | 82’ Chance! Axel Disasi heads wide from a corner
❗ | 87’ Chance! Amadou Onana wide
⛔ | 89’ Zaïre-Emery shot blocked
🗒️ | 90’ Time nearly up but Villa do love an injury time concession, 3’ of injury time
🗒️ | 90’ Onana, excellent since he came on, wins a foul off Kvaratskhelia
❗ | 90’+1 Chance! Morgan Rogers wide from Ollie Watkins’ ball after Martínez takes a quick free kick
🥅 | 90’+2 Goal, 1-3, (Paris Saint Germain), Nuno Mendes
🗒️ | Cruel, cruel luck, against the last 10’ run of play but in truth that reflects the superiority in Paris tonight, Villa will be devastated though, at 1-2 next week was going to be very different. Now, unless PSG don’t travel well, Villa’s Champions League journey ends at the Quarter Final stage
⛔ | 90’+4 Nearly 4, finger tip save from Martínez to thwart Zaïre-Emery
🕒 | 90’+4 Paris Saint Germain 3-1 Aston Villa
🗒️ | Villa outplayed but not outclassed, too much going for PSG tonight but it took two wondergoals and a very fortunate late strike to put the tie almost out of reach

MATCH QUOTES
“Aston Villa plays very good football. “We're going to see two teams with their own characteristics. I hope we see an open and complex match. “Aston Villa is capable of coming out from the back, capable of managing space well, and they have the ability to attack with second-row players. “This will require excellent defensive skills and great defensive efficiency from us. It doesn't matter if a player is higher or lower; it doesn't worry me. “I would say this team is similar to ours in that they have a lot of versatile players. It's difficult to know who will play, especially since they strengthened so much this winter. “They have different playing styles. It's a very open and difficult double header for both teams. “I think it's 50-50. Against Liverpool, everyone said we had no chance. There are two teams that can move up to the next level. We'll have to do what it takes to qualify. "Our friendship has been built through our clashes. I'm delighted to be facing one of the coaches with the greatest European career. He's a coach who takes care of his work. His team has improved thanks to him. “Ultimately, every coach has their own style and way of managing their squad. Unai Emery is an expert when it comes to player performance. Wherever he's been, he's gotten the best out of them.” Luis Enrique, PSG Manager “Probably a strange one because you can never predict in advance that you are going to face your own team, really. He has been brilliant since he has came in. He has worked really hard and you can see that on the pitch. “He makes efforts for the team defensively. Offensively, you can just see his class whenever he touches the ball. “I remember his first cameo at Villa Park, he was brilliant and glided through the midfielders who he came up against. I like him a lot because he works very hard for the team and takes responsibility with the ball. “He tries to pick up spaces which is really good for me, so I can find him in forward areas. Off the pitch, he is a really calm, good guy and works hard. “Probably, because when you look at him, you don’t think he is a hard worker in that sense where he is more so a ball-player. “Off the ball he does his job really good and that’s what we need from every player. “He has been working really hard on the pitch, off the pitch. He has fitted into the team really well and in the system. It suits him to play as the number 10 off the striker. It allows him to be free around the striker, so we can find him between the lines.” Youri Tielemans on Marco Asensio “He is a good guy, he is humble, he is a very good professional player. “He is really happy with his teammates, he has been demanding from himself in everything. “We want to work with him, with the team. I think he is playing freely, he is playing comfortably, and this is the most important thing. “We are trying to connect with him as a person firstly, and after that to connect with him as a player. “His process here is getting better as well. He is playing in two different positions, he started as a left winger, now he is playing more as a striker. “How he can exploit his qualities as best as possible with us. This is the process we have, still work to do, still process to do, but the most important is his feeling. “We are seeing him smiling, it is the best news we can have. I am seeing him happy, I am seeing him committed with everything we are doing. And now only to watch him play on the field.” Unai Emery on Marcus Rashford "I spent two years here. I am very thankful and I learned and had experiences. I am trying to transform for my moment now as a coach. Feeling good. "It is the first time I am here again in Paris. It is something special for me and I am very proud of how I am coming back here playing Champions League with Aston Villa. "Based on the way they beat Liverpool with fantastic football, now, with Real Madrid, with Barcelona, PSG are favourites in the Champions League. "Aston Villa is a historic club in the world and they won the European Cup in 1982. When I arrived here I knew this history. My challenge was to be contending for trophies, to play in Europe again, and to play Champions League is amazing. To keep it consistent is my next challenge. "To play a Champions League quarter-final in Paris is something really special and amazing for everybody who is involved with Aston Villa but something we want to be consistently doing. We have to respond to everything they do tactically and it is a huge challenge for me. "We are feeling confident and comfortable in this competition. Our objective is to compete, take our opportunities, and to enjoy how we are doing it. "He [Emiliano Martinez] is mature and he is responsible. He is getting better at controlling his emotions. When he arrived at Aston Villa to now it is a different Emi Martinez. He is a better player, better goalkeeper, and now my conversation with him is to always focus on football. "He [Luis Enrique] is one of the best coaches in the world. I faced him a lot of times and always it is difficult tactically. He is very demanding with how he is creating and building his team. They are very good in pressing and with the ball they are a team who keeps the ball and being so aggressive and intense in each action." Unai Emery pre-match. “It is not changing a lot because at 2-1 we were thinking for the next match playing to win. At 3-1, it is the same. We need to win the next match. “We are here and enjoying ourselves. I am very proud of the players and of everything we are doing at Aston Villa. We are developing and increasing demands playing against PSG. We competed fantastically and were close to getting a good result. This goal at the end, we still need to win next week. “The expectation before was going on during the match. The last goal is a little bit disappointing because it was in the last minute, but it doesn’t change our mind, our belief or our idea. We have to win the next match. “Everything that happened on the pitch … OK. They have very intense players in the middle and quality on the wings. More or less, the result is in the way which could have happened.” Unai Emery, post match. "It was difficult, they’re a really good team who are well organised. We knew were in a fight and a little bit of quality from them and a few errors that could have helped prevent the goals but that’s football. "We’ve got another leg to turn it around, we’ll throw everything at them to win the tie. We’ll see where it takes us. "We've got nothing to lose. No one had us to win. We have to just go for it. We've got the quality to turn this around. It's not done yet." Morgan Rogers post match. "A tough night. We knew coming here it was going to be tough. They dominated Liverpool and they were unlucky to lose [the first leg]. "I thought we defended the box really well, I thought at the end we were unfortunate and unlucky to concede. We have Villa Park next game - I think it will be a different game. "The manager spoke in there and he said "it is only half-time". At home we are really strong. We are more than capable to score two or three goals at home. We will learn from it and we will move on. "I love going out there and playing in the big games. We wanted to compete better and we wanted a better result. We have come a long way and it is only half-time - we are more than capable to go on and win the game "We have got to respect them, they're probably favourite to win the tournament. At Villa Park we feel confident. It will be a different game. I look forward too it." Matty Cash, post match
