Newcastle take an early lead but score a second very much against the run of play, 

Villa who had been dominant for half an hour equalise just before half time but the home side hit back to lead 2-3 before the break in a game they had been second best.

In a game Villa should have been well ahead the second half was notable for three things, firstly Newcastle played with 10 men and secondly did so with a verve hitherto unseen however still Villa were more than a match. 

Thirdly the shocking lack of sportsmanship from the home side after the referee refused a penalty midway through the second period.

Prolonged and unecessary protestations from Newcastle led the referee to not only reverse his decision, but to do so after several passages of play had elapsed.

Villa's threat continued desspite being 2 goals behind but 10-man Newcastle expertly picked Ramsay's men off on the break.
