On This Day

Tommy Docherty's Villa now have one League defeat in thirteen matches and seven wins under his stewardship but have now not won in four to make it ten wins, thirteen draws and thirteen defeats in thirty six division two games so far this season. The results however are only one side of the story with the football under Docherty best described as conservative, the aggression, fouls and booking counts up and time-wasting used as a clear tactic, but despite the concerns, Docherty's results are keeping Villa well away from the danger zone but seventeen games into his tenure there is widespread desire for the shackles to come off and for the football to mirror the manager's self confidence.

On This Day

Joe Mercer's Villa end 1960 with just three defeats in their last sixteen make it thirteen wins, ten at home, three draws and nine defeats, seven away, in twenty five games following their return to the top flight. Villa's return to division one had been an unqualified success so far as a small squad had dealt admirably with a fixture pile up to record some impressive League results and to progress in the inaugural League Cup ahead of their first FA Cup fixtures of the season.

On This Day

Joe Mercer's Villa concede five for the second successive League game and life back in the top flight looks significantly more challenging than it had after the opening day win over Chelsea. Villa had now conceded twelve goals in three games but had managed to score eight over the same period suggesting goals for were not going to be the problem. As a result of the defeat by the seaside Joe Mercer makes it fourteen losses in thirty one top flight matches as Villa boss and makes it a win and two defeats in three division one games so far this season.
