On This Day

Vic Crowe's Villa make it successive wins at the end of the season to record thirty two wins, six draws and eight defeats in 46 division three games. As a result, Villa achieve a record number of wins in a single league season - 32 - and a record points haul for the Third Division - 70. Vic Crowe’s Villa had simply stormed the division from November, winning 32 games and blitzing the 100 goals in a season barrier for the ninth time. Villa scored a total of 100 League and cup goals. That placed the 1971-72 campaign 9th in Villa’s 9 100+ seasons behind 1930-31 (131) 1928-29 (115) 1960-61 (112) 1912-13 (106) 1931-32 (105) 1929-30 (105) 1891-92 (102) and level with 1893-94 (100). Villa were on a march and legends were being born as Jimmy Cumbes, Ray Graydon, Brian Little, Ian Ross and Chris Nicholl all made their debuts.
