• Manchester United were heading to defeat against Sheffield Wednesday when the home team were allowed additional time - subsequently coined ‘Fergie time’ - to scramble a 96th minute winner. 

• The arguments had just begun and whilst Manchester United could stretch stoppages to justify the additional time, Sheffield Wednesday pointed out that it wasn’t a literal replacement of time but an approximation of time that was added on.

Birch, who tragically passed away aged just 46 from cancer in 2009, is still the subject of one of the most popular terrace chants that rings out from Villa home and away. Graham Taylor's Villa draw their final game of the season to finish the season 17th in the table, one point clear of the final relegation place. Villa’s first season in the top flight after one year in the second tier saw Graham Taylor’s side consistently in mid-table for much of the season but such was the tight nature of the League that they were rarely more than a defeat away from falling into the drop zone. Conversely they were also rarely more than a win away from securing safety and had Alan McInally’s form from the first half of the season continued, would in all likelihood have finished far higher up the table. As it was McInally scored just once after January, having scored twenty one in the first five months of the season. Sadly Villa wouldn’t get to see McInally in a much improved squad for 1989-90 as he made his final appearance for Villa aged 26 before moving on to to Bayern Munich in July 1989 for a fee of £1,100,000. McInally had played for Villa in 1987-88 and 1988-89 making 69 appearances and scoring 25 goals after his arrival from Celtic for £225,000 in July 1987. Also moving on as part of Graham Taylor’s squad overhaul was long time defender Allan Evans who made his final Villa appearance aged 32 before moving on to Leicester City in August 1989. Evans was the last of the League and European Cup winning team to leave Villa. Evans played for Villa between 1977-78 and 1988-89 making 466 appearances and scoring 60 goals. Centre back Martin Keown made his final appearance for Villa aged just 22 before moving on to Everton in July 1989 for a fee of £750,000. Keown had played for Villa between 1986-87 and 1988-89 making 130 appearances and scoring 3 goals following his arrival from Arsenal for £200,000 in June 1986. Central defender Steve Sims made his final Villa appearance aged 31 before moving on to Burton Albion in October 1990. Sims played for Villa in 1987-88 and 1988-89 making 46 appearances.

Graham Taylor's Villa lose for the third successive League game despite Alan McInally's thirteenth of the season as they fall back to 14th in the table.

Billy McNeill's Villa win in only their second game under his leadership and as a result have won eight of their last thirty six league games losing eighteen.

• Villa open the season, their first without either Ron Saunders or Tony Barton in eleven years, with a win over Coventry at Villa Park.

• Graham Turner takes charge of Villa for the first time following Herbert Douglas Ellis' sacking of Tony Barton in what as apparently the latest attempt to remove all traces of the League Title and European Cup winning seasons by the unpopular and allegedly bitter Chairman under whose watch success had been absent.

• Turner arrives as a respected lower League manager having managed minnows Shrewsbury Town to relative success on a tight budget in recent seasons. Despite or maybe because of that his arrival is a shock and far from universally welcomed as a step forward from Barton and far from being of sufficient quality to succeed not only the great Ron Saunders / Tony Barton partnership but also before that the tireless work of Vic Crowe. Indeed this is an appointment more akin to the desperate days of the late 1960’s and not one of recent European champions. The appointment does however meet favour with the miserly intentions of the Chairman.
