On This Day

  • Villa deliver a complete European performance to beat Dynamo Kiev in the quarter finals of the European Cup as Tony Barton delivers again, extending his unbeaten run to seven, but Dennis Mortimer suffers a late dislocated shoulder that threatens to rule Villa's midfield general out of some crucial games.

  • Villa win 2-0 on aggregate after their goalless draw in the away leg at the Dynamo Stadium to progress to the European Cup semi final.

  • Tony Barton had now led Villa for nine games and delivered four wins, four draws and a defeat since taking over from Ron Saunders whose record over 35 games in 1981-82 had been fifteen wins, eight draws and twelve losses.

  • Gordon Cowans makes his 250th appearance in a Villa shirt (235 Starts) to make it W114 D66 L70, 35 Goals and 33 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.68 games he has played so far in his Villa career.

On This Day

  • Villa face FC Dynamo Kyiv for the first time in competitive football, Kyiv become the 120th team that the Villa first team has played in League or Cup football, Villa’s eighth continental European opponents and their first from Ukraine.

  • Tony Barton's Villa secure an excellent goalless draw in the away leg at the Dynamo Stadium to leave it all to play for in the European Cup third round second leg at Villa Park despite problems surrounding the tie. Barton had formally protested to the Soviet Football Federation about the hotel accommodation after the team was unexpectedly denied rooms in the plush Hotel Yalta and moved to a lesser establishment. Not only that but the game itself was played in Simferopol after Dynamo's own pitch was ruled out by a severe winter with Villa kept in the dark about the venue. On the field Allan Evans failed his fitness fight, with Colin Gibson also missing out.
