Villa face Górnik Zabrze for the first time in competitive football, Górnik become the 113th team that the Villa first team has played in League or Cup football, Villa’s third continental European opponents and their first from Poland.
Ron Saunders Villa beat Górnik in the second round of the UEFA Cup courtesy of a Ken McNaught brace despite losing 'keeper Jimmy Rimmer to illness in the 19'. It would prove to be the final appearance for Rimmer's replacement, Jake Findlay, 23, who moved on to Luton Town in November 1978 for a fee of £100,000. Findlay had played for Villa between 1973-74 and 1977-78 making 17 appearances. Meanwhile, right back Gary Williams made his first appearance in the Villa squad aged 16.
