On This Day
Villa recover from their first League defeat in four but are held at Villa Park to leave them with five wins in thirteen Championship matches under Dean Smith.
Villa’s difficult patch continues as goalkeeper Lovre Kalinić concedes another two goals (8 in 3 games since his debut) leaving Villa two down to lowly Hull.
A second half comeback stops the rot but Villa now have just one win in 6 games and sit in 13th place with a seemingly unlikely late run to the play offs the only potential passage to promotion.
Winger Yannick Bolasie makes his 21st and final appearance for Villa (9 Starts) aged 29 before ending his loan spell from Everton early, Bolasie left with a record of W7 D9 L5, 2 Goals, 4 Assists and 4 Bookings.
Former Villa defender Eric Lichaj lines up for Hull.

On This Day
Villa fail to score for the seventh time in eight League matches and lose for the fifth successive game as finally, finally, the Paul Lambert regime - one that should have been ended in the Winter of 2012 - is finally put to an end over two painful years later.
Villa lose their 13th game in 25 Premier League matches under Paul Lambert.
Since the start of 2013-14 Villa had lost 33 of their 63 League matches under Paul Lambert.
Villa are without a win in ten League games under Paul Lambert.
Villa record the second lowest goals total in a top flight season after 25 games (12).
The defeat to Hull represented Paul Lambert’s 101st league match in charge during which time he had lost 50, won 25 and scored 98.
Of his total of 115 games in charge, Lambert had lost 56.
Since the start of the 2011-12 season under Alex McLeish, Villa had taken 139 points from 139 league games.
Following this latest defeat, Villa dropped into the bottom three, swapping places with victors Hull City.
Sadly the repercussions of Lambert's toxic reign would outlast his departure as Villa would struggle to recover from his mismanagement for seasons to come. The worst manager in Villa's history? Without question.
The only surprise of this latest defeat was that Villa finally acted and sacked Lambert.
In truth Lambert could have been sacked early in his first season.
Undoubtedly he probably should have been fired after recording Villa’s worst defeat in history in December 2012.
And he certainly should have been dismissed at the end of his first campaign.
Yet, not only did Lambert retain the support of the Owner he had significant backing from a crowd who had demanded his appointment as a replacement to the much maligned - but whisper it quietly - far more effective manager on and off the pitch, Alex McLeish.
Indeed for many it was not until Palace away in 2014 that the patience broke. Yet the hierarchy still did not act and another round of bizarre recruitment saddled Villa with a squad simply not good enough for top flight football.
Lambert had been simply atrocious from appointment but the sad reality was that under Randy Lerner these records had been building with a devastating inevitability.
Alan Hutton, one of the key victims of Lambert's terrible management following his refusal to select Hutton for 88 games between May 2012 and August 2014 receives his 15th caution in a Villa shirt to make it W13 D19 L26, 1 Goal, 3 Assists, 15 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.
Aly Cissokho, one of Lambert's many uninspiring signings, makes his 25th appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W6 D7 L12 and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.
Jores Okore loses for the 10th time in a Villa shirt on his 20th appearance (18 Starts) to make it W5 D5 L19, 1 Goal and 7 Bookings at a rate of over 1 booking for every 3 matches played. Okore would later be accused of match fixing at Aalborg Boldspilklub.

On This Day
Villa win for the first time in seven under the woeful Paul Lambert and record only their sixth home win in nineteen but it is enough to secure safety by virtue of the bottom three clubs being cut adrift.
Villa win their 10th game in 36 under Paul Lambert.
He might have been awful but boy was he lucky. Offered more than nine lives by a credulous owner, Paul Lambert, once again, lucked in, and got a crucial victory to save his, and Villa’s skin once again. Given he had taken Villa to the precipice twice there was little celebration for his achievement, just relief that the nightmare would soon be over and a fresh start available ahead of another season. Or so we thought.
Fabian Delph makes his 100th appearance in a Villa shirt (83 Starts) to make it W34 D25 L41, 6 Goals and 28 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Ashley Westwood contributes his 11th goal involvement in a Villa shirt on his 92nd appearance (67 Starts) to make it W19 D16 L31, 3 Goals, 8 Assists and 10 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Andreas Weimann scores his 20th goal in a Villa shirt on his 67th appearance (47 Starts) to make it W31 D24 L37, 20 Goals, 7 Assists and 6 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Meanwhile, in another move of breathtaking stupidity, Marc Albrighton - having not been offered a new contract - makes his final appearance for Villa aged 24 before moving on to Leicester City on a free transfer. Albrighton should have been one of the last players to be allowed to leave however such was the disarray and incompetence with which the club was being led, this yet to peak talent was discarded. In a depressingly ironic twist Albrighton would inspire Leicester to a frankly unbelievable Premier League title the same season that Villa were finally relegated after 6 years fighting the drop. Albrighton would leave, reluctantly, with a record of 102 Appearances, 59 Starts, W29 D29 L44, 9 Goals, 15 Assists, 13 Bookings and 1 Red Card. Lambert's play had stifled Albrighton and he would appear from the bench 16 times in 32 games under the woeful Scot but Albrighton recovered his form to contribute 4 assists in his last 8 games in a struggling team. How it was deemed acceptable to lose Albrighton is simply mistifying, that the player did not want to leave makes it even more so. The apologists for Lambert, of which there were still many, simply could no longer be taken seriously as his squad vandalism continued. The fervent hope was that Lambert would be out the door before Albrighton's contract expired enabling a new, competent manager to sign the winger to fresh terms. No such luck.
Centre forward Jordan Bowery contributes his 1st assist on his 20th appearance in a Villa shirt (4 Starts) to make it W7 D4 L9, 0 Goal, 1 Assist and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.

Villa end the year eight games unbeaten, with five wins and fourth place in the League. Crucially Villa carry that momentum into the new year with a UEFA Cup campaign to look forward to and Champions League qualification on the cards. Indeed the only concern in Martin O'Neill's transformation of Villa is the strength of the squad outside the first XI as O'Neill's experimental Cup sides have repeatedly shown. Keeping clear of injuries, and maintaining form of key players could see a genuine top 4 tilt as 2009 beckoned with Villa in better shape than at any time in the last decade.
Brad Friedel makes his 25th appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W16 D6 L3, 27 Goals Conceded at a rate of 1.08 goals per game, 8 Clean Sheets (32%) and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.

On This Day
Villa sweep aside bottom of the Football League Hull in the third round of the FA Cup.
Left back Aaron Lescott, 20, makes his sole appearance in a Villa shirt to become the 733rd player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday for £135,000 in October 2000.
Right back Gary Charles, 28, makes his 104th and final appearance in a Villa shirt (102 Starts) before moving on to S.L. Benfica for a fee of £1,500,000 later this month. Charles missed the entire 1996-97 season after suffering a horrific injury in April 1996 and fought his way back to first team contention. Charles however wouldn’t be able to hold down a place or reach his pre injury form and was mainly used as a substitute under John Gregory - although he hit 3 goals in 9 games following his return. In total, Charles would leave with a record of W55 D24 L25, 4 Goals, 11 Assists and 4 Bookings across his interrupted Villa career.
Julian Joachim contributes his 25th goal involvement in a Villa shirt on his 87th appearance (47 Starts) to make it W35 D15 L32, 20 Goals, 5 Assists and 1 Booking at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.28 games played so far in his Villa career.
