On This Day

Vic Crowe's Villa open the season with a handsome win over Plymouth as winger Ray Graydon made his debut aged 24 after moving from Bristol Rovers for a fee of £50,000 plus forward Brian Godfrey in July 1971. Also making his bow for Villa was goalkeeper Tommy Hughes, 24, after moving from Chelsea in May 1971 for a fee of £12,500. In less positive news, 25 year old midfielder Pat McMahon left the pitch on a stretcher after 65 minutes with a dislocated and fractured ankle - an injury that would necessitate long term absence and recovery.

On This Day

  • Villa are held at Plymouth but remain second in the table three points behind Bristol Rovers as Fulham lose again and drop to third. Villa though should have taken both points but another refereeing error saw a good goal disallowed as the unsighted officials ruled the ball had not crossed the line.

  • Vic Crowe's Villa return to League action but can only draw at Home Park to make it eleven wins, seven draws and four defeats in twenty two division three games so far this season.

On This Day

  • If the first game was defined by fog then the replay was all about mud. So much mud that with the full time score at 0-0 the referee declined to play the additional 30 minutes extra time as the surface was simply unplayable. Another replay beckoned to earn a place in the League Cup Quarter Finals.

  • Joe Mercer's Villa have to settle for a goal-less draw in the League Cup fourth round replay at Home Park ahead of a second replay - once again at second division Plymouth.

  • Meanwhile, goalkeeper Fred Potter made his Villa debut aged 20 after joining from Cradley Heath Juniors in June 1956.

On This Day

Joe Mercer's Champions Villa lose their final game of the season but it hardly matters as they make it twenty five wins, nine draws and eight defeats, seven away, in forty two division two games. Villa under Mercer had delivered an excellent season and after a fallow period were once again in the ascendancy. A season featuring outstanding form, entertainment and some spectacular results ended with well deserved promotion and the second division title. Along the way Villa had also reached the FA Cup semi finals, sweeping aside three top tier sides, to put Mercer and Villa right back at the top of the footballing map.
