On This Day
Villa suffer a shock defeat in the third round of the FA Cup.
Goalkeeper Lovre Kalinić makes his Villa debut aged 28 after joining from KAA Gent for £5,400,000 earlier this month to become the 925th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.
The Croatian international ‘keeper endures a torrid debut - conceding 3 goals including the first within 2 minutes of taking the field.
Forward Callum O’Hare makes his final Villa appearance aged 20 before being released in June 2020. O’Hare made 9 appearances for the first team with a record of W3 D0 L5, 1 Assist and 2 Bookings before spending two spells out on loan with Coventry City.
Centre forward Keinan Davis makes his first appearance of the season as a 72’ substitute following injury which had kept him out of contention since March 2018 so far in his Villa career.
Scott Hogan made his 61st and final appearance (32 Starts) of a curiously barren spell in a Villa shirt. With huge expanses of time between goals and record, bar a 5 game scoring streak in January 2018, Villa's return on investment in Hogan can be described as nothing other than pitiful with a record of W27 D11 L23, 10 Goals, 4 Assists and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career. In League football - all that really mattered - Hogan's performance was P57, Scored 7.

On This Day
Villa lose for the sixth successive Premier League game and for the seventeenth time in twenty eight matches under Tim Sherwood.
As a result, Villa dropped to bottom of the Premier League table, four points adrift of safety with ten games played.
Villa have now failed to win any of their 5 home Premier League games this season under Tim Sherwood.
Villa's latest defeat comes against Swansea City - side previously without an away win in 2015-16.
After twenty eight games, Sherwood’s reign is over, and Villa, who already looked dead certs for relegation faced a totally unnecessary mid season upheaval that could have been avoided had the club used the summer to appoint a manager capable of turning Villa around.
Sherwood, with huge amounts of goodwill, had already presided over nine defeats in sixteen as interim boss and any objective analysis of his 2014-15 campaign would have finished it there with a huge debt of gratitude at a seemingly inevitable relegation avoided.
Villa under Lerner however are nothing if not lazy and would always take the easy way out regardless of the impact on the club. The folly of such an approach is laid bare yet again.
Jordan Ayew scores his first goal in a Villa shirt on his 8th appearance (5 Starts) to make it W3 D0 L5, 1 Goal and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Carles Gil suffers his 10th defeat in a Villa shirt on his 14th appearance (9 Starts) to make it W3 D1 L10, 2 Goals, 1 Assist and 3 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Brad Guzan concedes his 225th goal on his 150th appearance in a Villa shirt (148 Starts) to make it W46 D32 L72, 1 Assist, 226 Goals Conceded, 34 Clean Sheets, 1.57 Goals per League Game and 7 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Joleon Lescott loses for the sixth time in six league games in a Villa shirt on his 7th appearance for the club to make it W1 D0 L6 so far in his Villa career.

Two steps forward one step back as Tim Sherwood's Villa lose for the third time in five Premier League matches to leave them deep in relegation trouble with just eight games left of the season.
Tim Sherwood's Villa end a run of three victories with a third defeat in five Premier League games under the new boss courtesy of a late Swansea strike. The reverse leaves Villa just three points clear of the drop zone with eight to play underlining the huge job Sherwood has to do to overcome the mess Lambert had left behind.
Villa have now failed to score in 17 of their 30 Premier League matches in 2014-15.
Villa have won just 3 of 15 home matches this season.
Brad Guzan concedes for the 200th time in a Villa shirt on his 135th appearance (133 Starts) to make it W43 D30 L62, 1 Assist, 200 Goals Conceded, 31 Clean Sheets, 1.55 Goals per League Game and 7 Bookings so far in his Villa career.

On This Day
Villa plumb yet new depths under Paul Lambert as he masterminds another loss against a relegation threatened side and leaves Villa hanging by a thread above the trap door for a second successive season.
That Lambert should not be in post is unquestionable, that he is underlines the shameful, abject and incompetent regime that has been running the club into the ground since the summer of 2010.
Villa lose for the 18th time in the Premier League in 35 games under Paul Lambert.
Without an assist in 24 games under Paul Lambert, Marc Albrighton had now contributed 3 in his last 7 games to make it 101 appearances (58 Starts), W28 D29 L44, 9 Goals, 14 Assists, 13 Bookings and 1 Red Card. Indeed one of the few bright spots of Lamberts torturous reign was that Albrighton, who had shown such promise under Gérard Houllier and Alex McLeish was now finding form again.
Ashley Westwood collects his 10th booking in a Villa shirt on his 65th appearance (63 Starts) to make it W18 D16 L31, 2 Goals, 8 Assists and 10 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Nathan Baker collects his 10th booking in a Villa shirt on his 71st appearance (67 Starts) to make it W22 D14 L35, 10 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.
Centre forward Grant Holt makes his 10th and final appearance for Villa of his unexpected and widely derided loan spell from Championship side Wigan Athletic. Indeed Holt left as he came, overweight, unfit with no fanfare and little enthusiasm, Holt could never shake off perceptions that he was Lambert's man in a distressed, distracted and disunited dressing room and left with a record of W2 D2 L6, 1 Goal and 1 Booking. One thing for sure was his arrival was for anything but footballing reasons as the needlessly opaque and downright unpleasant atmosphere fostered by Lambert was continually being fed.
Brad Guzan concedes his 150th goal in a Villa shirt on his 100th Start (102 Appearances) to make it W35 D23 L44, 1 Assist, 153 Goals Conceded, 23 Clean Sheets, 1.61 Goals per League Game and 5 Bookings so far in his Villa career.

On This Day
Paul Lambert's Villa start 2013 in terrible shape. A manager who looked out of his depth after 8 games now looked positively dangerous after 25.
Villa stop their worst ever run of defeats - losing three and conceding fifteen without scoring - but can only draw with Swansea as they enter the new year in arguably the worst form since 1970 and undeniably since 1986.
Seventeen goals conceded in four games, a record defeat, a bomb squad that had robbed the squad of much needed defensive talent and a bizarre choice to consistently leave the best goalkeeper at the club on the bench, were just the headlines of Lambert’s reign. If Paul Lambert’s incoherent mumblings made no sense nor did his actions.
Yet for the first time in four games Villa scored as Christian Benteke once again secured Villa points they didn’t otherwise look like getting and climb to sixteenth in the table - one point above the relegation places.
Paul Lambert’s preferred side had delivered just once, albeit spectacularly at Anfield, in 21 League games and that was enough for many to cling to the belief that the Villa boss would get things right. Yet the reality was Villa were in a mess that would fester and worsen through inaction. Pride comes before a fall after all.
Christian Benteke's remarkable start continutes as he contributes his 15th goal involvement in a Villa shirt on his 21st appearance (19 Starts) to make it W7 D6 L8, 9 Goals, 6 Assists and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Brad Guzan makes his 50th appearance in a Villa shirt (48 Starts) to make it W20 D11 L19, 72 Goals Conceded, 14 Clean Sheets, 1.70 Goals per League Game and 4 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Fabian Delph collects his 15th booking in a Villa shirt on his 49th appearance (35 Starts) at a rate of a card every 3.27 games he has played and makes it W18 D15 L16, 2 Goals and 15 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Matt Lowton makes his 25th appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W8 D7 L10, 1 Goal and 4 Bookings so far in his Villa career.

Villa draw for the seventh time under Alex McLeish to leave them with three wins in thirteen Premier League games but another disappointing result is overshadowed by the tragic passing of Gary Speed and his close connection with man of the match Shay Given.
James Collins collects his 15th booking in a Villa shirt on his 87th appearance (82 Starts) to make it W33 D32 L22, 5 Goals and 15 Bookings so far in his Villa career.

Meanwhile, off the pitch Barry Bannan is banned from driving for 18 months but avoids a custodial sentence for a drunken crash on the M1 as further signs of a lack of professionalism has infected the club from top to bottom.
