Biography
Manager #18 for Aston Villa, Jozef Vengloš.
When Doug Ellis appointed Jozef Vengloš in July 1990 to replace the departed Graham Taylor he became the first manager from outside Britain or Ireland to take charge of a top-flight English team.
Taylor was a tough task to follow and despite his glowing references Vengloš’ sole season in charge of Villa looks at first glance a difficult one. A 17th placed finish, saved from relegation by a late season win having been runners up in the previous campaign; an ageing and misfiring squad without the motivating managerial hand of Taylor; and the star player, David Platt, rapidly making for the exit door; Vengloš had more than his fair share of challenges.
A spiteful local press campaign hardly helped - and set in motion a distinct distrust of the journalistic intentions of the local rag that remains today - but the reality was that Vengloš’ Villa reign began very competently indeed.
Vengloš’ first 16 games brought 9 wins, 4 draws and just 3 losses.
The wins included the famous European night when Villa vanquished Inter Milan at Villa Park courtesy of goals from Kent Nielsen and David Platt.
A fortnight later and Villa’s season and Vengloš’ regime was shattered. An extremely suspect refereeing performance at the San Siro saw Inter clinch exactly the number of goals needed to overturn Villa’s lead and thereafter Vengloš and his team seemed lost, unable to recover from the set back.
The final 33 games of the season brought 7 wins, 11 draws and 15 losses.
Yet Vengloš had joined the club with a strong reputation having been assistant coach when Czechoslovakia won the European Championship in 1976 and had two spells as manager, taking them to third place at the 1980 European Championship and the quarter-finals at the 1990 World Cup.
Reflecting on his time with Villa Vengloš recalled “For me it was a great honour.” A typically respectful response from a decent man not given the tools to do his job. Vengloš sole signing for the first team was Gary Penrice for a scarcely believable £1,000,000, whilst Ivo Staš’ arrival and non-appearance became stuff of legend.
Vengloš continued “For me it was a great honour and I tried to do my best at Villa. It was an excellent experience getting to know the inside atmosphere of English football. Those situations have helped me with work in other countries. When I came over there, for foreign people it was more difficult than now, but lots of managers have come over and done well.”
Introduced by Ellis in his typically pompous and patronising style saying “Do you know who this is?” and a local press delighting firstly in their childish “Dr Who?” only then to up the ante to “Dr No” for Vengloš’ alleged reluctance to enter the transfer market. Vengloš days were numbered before they had even begun. A few years later a guy called Arsene Wenger suffered similar indignities from a brazenly xenophobic press corps which soon infected the fan base.
That no-one connected the dots in the transfer market which blatantly signposted Ellis’ reluctant, miserly and often belated spending windily served to reinforce the lack of support he could expect.
Thankfully though there were some within the playing staff and beyond who recognised then, and some subsequently, the validity of the ideas Vengloš was bringing to English football and which would be widely celebrated once Wenger won his first title.
Dwight Yorke recalled “The rhings he did at Villa, other clubs were doing seven or eight years later.”
Vengloš revealed “I told them after the game not to stay in the dressing room. The boys who played have to run around and do their stretches and those who didn’t will have a normal training session.
“They weren’t used to that and it probably felt a little bit strange in the beginning but after a while the players knew why they were doing it and it worked very well.”
The footballing culture of the time in England was another culture shock - beer, snacks and laughter after a loss, sometimes minutes after the final whistle wasn’t something Vengloš had bargained for.
Equally a powerful intellect and gift for languages was put to the greatest strain as the dressing room refused to budge an inch to help the new boss
“I had a bit of a problem with my English which was not really in the top level as it probably should have been.I know of course that English is the world No.1 language and I tried my best, I spoke Russian, Portuguese and can communicate in Spanish and so on.
“But a few things those days were a bit different to what we had been doing in central Europe. The methodology of training, the analysing of nutrition and the recuperation, regeneration and physiological approach to the game.“
The denouement of Vengloš doomed reign came full circle as the local rag plastered the intentionally spiteful “For God Sake Go, Jo” headline across its pages.
He did, but it wasn’t him who needed to repair his reputation.
Jozef Vengloš passed away on 26 January 2021 aged 84.

Villa lose in a game they dominate as the City 'keeper is forced to make multiple saves to deny Tony Daley 🏴, Gordon Cowans 🏴, David Platt 🏴 and Kevin Gage 🏴 before the home side are awarded a soft penalty by referee John Watson for which replays confirmed what the naked eye saw in real time - that no contact had been made.
Watson doubled down on the controversy by refusing Villa a spot kick for a clear shove on David Platt 🏴 with City hitting a second on the break as Villa continued to take the game to them.
Unlucky thought the defeat was Villa make it one point from nine in the first division as they fall to 18th in the table under Jozef Vengloš 🇨🇿.

Villa win in what is described as "arguably the best performance an English club side has ever produced in Europe." as the appointment of Jozef Vengloš continues to pay dividends.
Villa face Inter Milan for the first time in competitive football, Inter become the 131st team that the Villa first team has played in League or Cup football, Villa’s 17th continental European opponents and their second from Italy following their meeting with Juventus in their 1982-83 European Cup campaign.
Villa put on one of the great Villa Park European nights - a setting for which these games were seemingly made. A stunning victory over Italian giants Inter Milan in the 1st leg left Villa’s prospects for progression looking very promising.
Villa were now unbeaten in the last five and had now lost just once in eleven games under Jozef Vengloš winning eight.
Kent Nielsen scores his third goal for the club and in so doing contributes his 10th goal involvement in a Villa shirt on his 61st appearance (58 Starts) to make it W32 D12 L17, 3 Goals and 7 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 6.10 games he has played so far in his Villa career.

Jozef Vengloš shocks football with his innovative prescription of vitamin pills and glucose minerals to restore lost energy following the Inter game but the comedown still proves too much as Villa are held to a goalless draw by Leeds.
Vengloš' superb run continues however with one defeat in twelve games and eight wins including the famous victory over Inter Milan last time out.
Jozef Vengloš' Villa fail to score and draw 0-0 for the second consecutive League game but have now lost just once in twelve games and sit eighth in the table.

On This Day
An utterly shocking refereeing performance from Aleksey Spirin hands the tie to Inter Milan despite their ability to win through without his help.
There was no debate that it had happened just whether it was done intentionally or through incompetence, three decades later we still do not know.
One of the most controversial games in Villa’s history, heading into the 2nd leg Villa held a 2-0 lead and victory, while not assured, was certainly a strong possibility.
The game however would not play out that way and a controversial refereeing performance - including allowing an Inter Milan goal despite the cross having clearly been delivered from a position out of play - saw Villa harshly penalised throughout and Inter the beneficiaries of the referee’s largesse.
Such were the scale of the ‘errors’ by the officials on the night that still today there are real suspicions as to whether something altogether more sinister was going on. Internazionale would go on to win the UEFA Cup.
Undeservedly then, Jozef Vengloš’ Villa were dumped out of the UEFA cup and had now lost twice in as many games.
This demoralising defeat acted almost as a watershed moment for Vengloš’ Villa as their strong start to the season - losing only twice in fourteen games and winning nine - gave way to relegation form and a tumble down the table.

Villa lose their Boxing Day match with Everton as David Platt clears a goalbound header for his own team off the line in the final minutes to leave Villa beaten by a goal to nil. Before that point Jozef Vengloš' side had proved vastly superior to their hosts and only a slip from captain Stuart Gray allowed Everton to score with a rare chance.
Jozef Vengloš' Villa lose for the first time in five but have now failed to score for the eighth time in fourteen games.

Villa are undone by a late goal once again as they are beaten at Highfield Road to make it successive defeats in all competitions and their 🟥 ninth defeat in thirty games under Jozef Vengloš 🇨🇿.
Jozef Vengloš' 🇨🇿 Villa lose at Highfield Road despite David Platt's 🏴 opener. Villa had now not won in five and had won just three in their last seventeen as Jozef Vengloš 🇨🇿 debut season began to unravel.
Meanwhile, midfielder and Villa cult hero Paul Birch 🏴 made his 223rd & final appearance in a Villa shirt (192 Starts) aged 28 before moving on to Wolverhampton Wanderers in February for a fee of £400,000. Birchy had played for Villa between 1983-84 and 1990-91 and left with a record of 🟩 W80 🟨 D59 🟥 L84, ⚽ 25 Goals and 🔥 28 Assists across his Villa career. Birch, who tragically passed away aged just 46 from cancer in 2009, is still the subject of one of the most popular terrace chants that rings out from Villa home and away. A wonderful player who will never be forgotten.
Midfielder David Platt 🏴 scores his ⚽ 60th goal in a Villa shirt on his 🕒 142nd appearance to make it 🟩 W59 🟨 D34 🟥 L49, ⚽ 60 Goals and 🔥13 Assists at a rate of a goal evey 2.37 games he has played so far in his Villa career.

Villa concede five goals for the second time in six games.
The Birmingham Evening Mail sink to a new low as their ongoing attempts to destabilise the reign of Jozef Vengloš 🇨🇿 sees them plaster their back page with “FOR GOD'S SAKE GO DR JO!”. Perhaps emboldened by their similar successful campaign earlier in the season against the manager of neighbours Birmingham, the paper was anything but constructive or helpful after an admittedly chastening defeat.
The irony however that they admitted “It was true that in a vividly entertaining first half Villa should have scored four times” was not lost on readers who witnessed the game without an agenda.
Villa had suffered from bad luck and naiveté throughout Vengloš’ 🇨🇿 reign but the number of bad performances could be counted on one hand, results however was another thing.
Villa had now 🟥 lost for fifteenth time in forty three games under Jozef Vengloš having also secured 🟩 fifteen wins to sit 17th in the table - exactly where they had been two years previously under the feted Graham Taylor - four points clear of relegation with a game in hand over the bottom three.
Centre back Andy Comyn 🏴 22, makes his 🕒 21st & final appearance in a Villa shirt (17 Starts) before moving on to Derby County in August 1991 for a fee of £200,000. Comyn had cost Villa £34,000 two years earlier and left with a record of 🟩 W6 🟨 D8 🟥 L7, ⚽ 0 Goals and 🔥 0 Assists across his short Villa career.

Villa concede five for the second successive game and the third time in seven games but the match proves very different at Elland Road as Villa fight back twice to equalise before three late Leeds goals end Villa's resistance.
Meanwhile the Birmingham Evening Mail are presumably skipping with joy as they can put the knife in even further despite the hypocrisy of admitting beneath the headline that Villa aren't going down.

On This Day
Villa end the season 17th, unbeaten in two, five points clear of the relegation places, three points better off than they had been under Graham Taylor 🏴 two seasons earlier as the Birmingham Evening Mail has a late attack of conscience on the eve of the departure of a dignified manager and bold experiment.
Jozef Vengloš' 🇨🇿 Villa end the season with a draw and unbeaten in two after a troubling second half of the season.
One win in the final ten games and five defeats, three of which saw Villa concede five goals had followed a previous 10 game spell of three wins and five defeats.
November to January had also seen a ten game spell of three defeats and three wins and so you would have to go back to October to find any sign of consistent, positive form.
That though was the paradox as Jozef Vengloš 🇨🇿 first sixteen games had brought nine wins and just three defeats. In the end then a season that had promised so much became unrecognisable after defeat in Milan in the UEFA Cup.
The consequences of that downturn in form resulted in the inevitable departure of Vengloš 🇨🇿 and also the loss of Villa captain David Platt 🏴.
Whilst not the most charismatic of heroes, midfielder Platt 🏴 had played for Villa between 1987-88 and 1990-91 and had become an instant success in Villa’s midfield with his non stop energy, box to box movement and goalscoring prowess.
A club figurehead and now England international was allowed to leave as Villa fans were once again calling into question Chairman Doug Ellis’ motives following his terrible strategy and management decisions in the mid 80’s and the loss of Villa boss Graham Taylor 🏴 the previous season - seemingly without a fight. As a result the close of the 1990-91 season threw up far more questions than answers.
Those concerns would however be addressed just weeks later as a new era dawned for Villa in the 1990s.
Midfielder David Platt 🏴 25 makes his 🕒 155th and final appearance in a Villa shirt before moving on to SSC Bari for £5,500,000. Villa had paid Crewe Alexandra £200,000 for his services 4 years previously. Platt left with an excellent record of 🟩 W62 🟨 D36 🟥 L55, ⚽ 68 Goals and 🔥15 Assists at a rate of a goal every. 2.28 games and one goal involvement for evey 1.87 games he played across his Villa career.
Centre forward Tony Cascarino 🇮🇪 makes his 🕒 54th and final appearance for Villa (50 Starts) aged 28 before moving to Celtic in July for a fee of £1,100,000. Cascarino 🇮🇪 left with a record of 🟩 W17 🟨 D17 🟥 L20, ⚽ 12 Goals and 🔥 8 Assists across his Villa career, doing so at a rate of 4.50 games per goal and 2.70 games per goal involvement.
Full back Kevin Gage 🏴 27 makes his 🕒 145th and final appearance in a Villa shirt (143 Starts). before moving on to Sheffield United in November 1991 for a fee of £150,000. Gage had been used relatively sparingly in his final season with Villa but that could not hide the outstanding contribution he made to the club, a regular scorer (for a full back) and obvious commitment, Gage was another outstanding buy by Graham Taylor. Gage left the club with a record of 🟩 W65 🟨 D32 🟥 L48, ⚽ 12 Goals and 🔥 15 Assists across his Villa career.
