🟩 4 May 1929, Villa 4-1 Wednesday, Villa Park
ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 4 May 1929
Villa end the season in 3rd place with 115 goals in all competitions but their characteristic wayward consistency under Billy Smith had meant they missed out on their seventh League title by two points.
Villa blitzed the 100 goals in a season barrier for the fourth time registering their highest ever total of 115 league and cup goals at a rate of 2.40 goals per game. That eclipsed Villa’s previous 100+ seasons of 1912-13 (106) 1891-92 (102) & 1893-94 (100).
Life under Billy Smith had already proven to have a nature of wildly contrasting sides but 1928-29 took this to new heights as Villa once again started poorly before a run of 28 games in which Villa suffered six losses, some heavy, but recorded 19 wins hitting 8, 7, 6 and 5 goals (on 3 occasions), 4 goals twice and 3 goals on 5 occasions. Villa would however concede three or more goals on twelve occasions throughout the season. As exciting as life was, further trophies were unlikely to be earned until life became a little more predictable under Smith.
