ON THIS DAY

Saturday, 2 May 1931

Villa end a remarkable season as runners up having scored ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY EIGHT GOALS - more than any other League team in history. Villa’s outstanding form throughout the season was the first time under Billy Smith that everything came together as each of his previous seasons had featured deep fallow periods sandwich between excellence. Although Pongo Waring’s fifty goal haul, forty nine in the League, took the headlines there were heroes throughout the team as Eric Houghton hit thirty and there was a remarkable consistency in team selection that had rarely been seen in recent decades. The greatest team, and season to not end up as Champions? Undoubtedly.
