As a result Houghton would leave his managerial post with immediate effect with Villa facing an increasingly difficult fight to avoid relegation. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Bill Beaton made his sole appearance for Villa aged 23 after joining the club from Dunfermline Athletic in October 1958. Beaton moved on to Airdrie in February 1960.
