ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 30 September 1967
Tommy Cummings' Villa draw for the first time this season to make two wins, a draw and seven defeats in ten League games and their fifth without scoring. As a result Villa had now lost fifteen of their last twenty games. Right back Mick Wright fractured his right leg during the match and was faced a long spell on the sidelines - perhaps not what he meant when he said he didnโt wish to play for the club again two weeks earlier. Meanwhile, forward Brian Godfrey made a goalscoring debut for Villa aged 27 after moving from Preston North End Forward Brian Greenhalgh, 20, who had made the same move also made his debut. As did centre back Fred Turnbull, 21, after joining from Centreโ64 club in August 1966. Departing the scene was centre forward Barry Stobart who made his final Villa appearance aged 29 before moving on to Shrewsbury Town in October 1967. Stobart played for Villa between 1964-65 and 1967-68 making 53 appearances and scoring 20 goals.
