ON THIS DAY
Monday, 26 April 1897
Double winners Villa won for the fifteenth time in 18 unbeaten games to finish 11 points clear of their nearest rivals Sheffield United in the First Division table.
Midfielder Jack Reynolds made his final appearance for Villa aged 28 before moving on to Glasgow Celtic. Reynolds arrived from neighbours West Bromwich Albion and went on to win three League Championships and Two FA Cups including the famed ‘Double’.
Johnny Campbell, Villa’s superstar Forward, played his final game for the club aged 25 before returning to Glasgow Celtic, much to the disappointment of the Villa faithful. Johnny had made 63 appearances scoring a remarkable 47 times winning the League Championship in both his seasons with the club as well as the FA Cup to complete the famed ‘Double’.
