ON THIS DAY

Saturday, 14 October 1899

A hat-trick from George Johnson gave reigning Champions Villa a second consecutive win but they remained third with Sunderland and Sheffield United also winning their games. As an aside, the team that had run Villa so close for the 1898-99 Championship, Liverpool, had a record this season of Played 8, Lost 8 and no points accrued. The worst start of any club in the top flight.
