George Ramsay's Villa open the season with a goalless draw following their worst League campaign to date in 1900-01. As a result Villa had now not won in 9 games including the end of the 1900-01 season. Meanwhile, forward Bert Banks and winger Willie Clarke made their Villa debuts aged 27 and 23 after joining from Millwall Athletic and Bristol Rovers respectively.
