๐ฉ 3 May 2014, Villa 3-1 Hull, Villa Park.
ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 3 May 2014
Villa win for the first time in seven under the woeful Paul Lambert and record only their sixth home win in nineteen but it is enough to secure safety by virtue of the bottom three clubs being cut adrift.
Villa win their 10th game in 36 under Paul Lambert.
He might have been awful but boy was he lucky. Offered more than nine lives by a credulous owner, Paul Lambert, once again, lucked in, and got a crucial victory to save his, and Villaโs skin once again. Given he had taken Villa to the precipice twice there was little celebration for his achievement, just relief that the nightmare would soon be over and a fresh start available ahead of another season. Or so we thought.
Fabian Delph makes his 100th appearance in a Villa shirt (83 Starts) to make it W34 D25 L41, 6 Goals and 28 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Ashley Westwood contributes his 11th goal involvement in a Villa shirt on his 92nd appearance (67 Starts) to make it W19 D16 L31, 3 Goals, 8 Assists and 10 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Andreas Weimann scores his 20th goal in a Villa shirt on his 67th appearance (47 Starts) to make it W31 D24 L37, 20 Goals, 7 Assists and 6 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Meanwhile, in another move of breathtaking stupidity, Marc Albrighton - having not been offered a new contract - makes his final appearance for Villa aged 24 before moving on to Leicester City on a free transfer. Albrighton should have been one of the last players to be allowed to leave however such was the disarray and incompetence with which the club was being led, this yet to peak talent was discarded. In a depressingly ironic twist Albrighton would inspire Leicester to a frankly unbelievable Premier League title the same season that Villa were finally relegated after 6 years fighting the drop. Albrighton would leave, reluctantly, with a record of 102 Appearances, 59 Starts, W29 D29 L44, 9 Goals, 15 Assists, 13 Bookings and 1 Red Card. Lambert's play had stifled Albrighton and he would appear from the bench 16 times in 32 games under the woeful Scot but Albrighton recovered his form to contribute 4 assists in his last 8 games in a struggling team. How it was deemed acceptable to lose Albrighton is simply mistifying, that the player did not want to leave makes it even more so. The apologists for Lambert, of which there were still many, simply could no longer be taken seriously as his squad vandalism continued. The fervent hope was that Lambert would be out the door before Albrighton's contract expired enabling a new, competent manager to sign the winger to fresh terms. No such luck.
Centre forward Jordan Bowery contributes his 1st assist on his 20th appearance in a Villa shirt (4 Starts) to make it W7 D4 L9, 0 Goal, 1 Assist and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.
