🟥 2 Sep 1907, Villa 1-4 United, Villa Park
ON THIS DAY
Monday, 2 September 1907
Villa open the season with a chastening home defeat to Manchester United - a team only promoted from the second tier for the first time for the previous season and who would go on to be crowned champions of the current campaign.
Meanwhile, winger Charlie Wallace made his Villa debut aged 22 after moving from Crystal Palace in May 1907 for a fee of £500.
Whilst, goalkeeper Harry Cooch made his final appearance for Villa aged 28 after making 25 appearances across his seven seasons with the club. Cooch had the relative misfortune to play for Villa during the same period as legendary ‘keeper Billy George which led to a custodian of quite some quality being selected far less than his talent allowed, Cooch would however cement his legacy with the club with his behind the scenes and coaching work across the coming decades.
Also appearing for the final time was forward Frederick Chapple who made his eleventh and final Villa appearance aged 23 before moving on to Birmingham in December 1907.
