đ¨ 23 Apr 1913, Villa 1-1 Sunderland, Villa Park
ON THIS DAY
Wednesday, 23 April 1913
Villa face off against Sunderland for the second successive match after having beaten their north eastern foes in the FA Cup final last time out. Sunderland however would hold Villa to a draw at Villa Park and clinch the title ahead of George Ramsay's team as they make it four unbeaten and seventeen wins, twelve draws and seven defeats in thirty six division one games so far this season.
Meanwhile, despite his outstanding first season for the Villa, forward Harold Halse played his final game for the club aged 27 ahead of his move to Chelsea in May 1913.
Halse only made his debut the previous September before scoring 29 goals in 37 appearances for the club. That decision raises questions still 100 years later and has echoes of the all too brief career of fellow Villa forward Johnny Campbell earlier in the century.
