Biography

Player #46 for Aston Villa, Albert Arthur Allen, played as a forward for the club. Albert represented Villa between 1887-88 and 1890-91.

Albert was born in Aston, less than a mile from the current Villa ground, on 7th April 1864 and made his debut as a 23 year old on 15th October 1887.

Villa had signed Albert from St. Phillips FC and he went on to represent the club over three seasons.

A goalscoring sensation who burst onto the Villa scene in the inaugural league season of 1888-89.

Sadly Albert’s talent and potential was taken away due to illness.

The Villa News and Record of 1st September 1906 paid tribute to Albert:

“A light, but most effective wing player, with a good turn of speed. Lack of weight and size did not affect his pluck. Dribbled like an artist and shot with force and good aim. Always did well in big games and was seen to special advantage in his international. A modest, unassuming player, whom it was a pleasure to meet.”

Albert’s final game for Villa came on 26th December 1890 aged 25 having played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Albert passed away on 13th October 1899 in Birmingham aged just 35.

Post Match.

Suddell of Preston North End totally reneges on his in game protests.

The match officials and FA however call for a reply under Cup tie conditions.

Suddell refuses such a move and threatens to pull Preston North End from the competition in protest unless the result is upheld.

All parties assume this is a fit of pique and sense will prevail in Preston however Villa are minded to not push the matter so as to not damage the credibility of the competition and relationships between the clubs.

Preston have no such magnanimous pretensions to the disgust of the footballing fraternity.

Umpires C. J. Hughes (Cheshire) and M. P. Betts (Harrow) confirm that both captains had agreed to play the match as a friendly on the second encroachment with Villa one goal to the good.

Referee Clegg denies the recollection of both captains and umpires and claims that Villa had not concurred with the game being treated as a friendly.

Oddly this evidence is accepted by the FA.

As a consequence the FA claim they can only judge whether Preston’s protest with the score at 0-0 means they are unable to claim the game at 3-1, and whether Villa’s alleged (by one individual, contested by four) failure to protest meant Villa were unable to retrospectively support Preston’s protest.

When the FA meet one week later they determine that Preston are awarded the match.

They do so whilst ignoring the basis upon which they had claimed the case would have been judged, in itself that basis, due to some unorthodox statements from referee Clegg, effectively absolved Preston of any responsibility for their protest and counter protests.

The FA decided Preston, should be awarded the game as “Aston Villa had not taken sufficient precautions for keeping the crowd outside the enclosure”.

Villa did not challenge the decision despite the wildly inconsistent nature of the referee’s recollections, the FA’s claims and basis for judgement and the abhorrent behaviour of Suddell and Preston North End.

Preston would end as FA Cup runners up to West Bromwich Albion.

Disgraceful and shabby behaviour from referee Clegg and Preston's Suddell see the game decided in an office at the Oval seven days on from the call of time.
Villa face Preston North End for the first time in competitive football, Preston become the 21st team that the Villa first team has played in League or Cup football.
Secretary Manager George Ramsay's Villa face off against the mighty North End in a game billed as "The Great Football Match", that sees the two best teams in the land play one another for the first time in League or Cup football. But the game is overshadowed by controversy caused by the utterly shabby behaviour of referee Clegg and Preston's Suddell. By FA dictat the holders are knocked out in the fifth round.

Villa win without being at their best however in a hitherto unseen move, Derby arrive with 10 listed men as their Bakewell is delayed. Derby name Shaw as an interim replacement. During the first half Derby centre forward Luckett is injured and has to retire from play. Villa face Burnley for the first time in competitive football, Burnley become the 27th team that the Villa first team has played in League or Cup football.
Villa start the match with only 8 players on the field due to a dense mist around the ground preventing the team's arrival. Following a delayed arrival of the majority of the Villa team, the referee deems play should commence 8v11.
After five minutes had elapsed a Cox and Devey joined the play but Villa are forced to played the fixture 10v11 as Dawson can not make it through the confitions. Playing with 10 men on a pitch of the heaviest variety, that would render Villa's style of play impossible even in an 11v11 match, inevitably leads to defeat.
Ironically, Villa's previous fixture had seen Derby arrive with 10 men, before being allowed to field 11 from kick off by use of a reserve, and then allowing a 12th man to take the field of play after one of the original line up was injured. No such fortune was afforded Villa at Turf Moor.

Albert Allen scores Villa's consolation as an injury ravaged Villa record a 1-8 scoreline that was the biggest defeat in all competitions until Paul Lambert rocked up at Villa Park for the 2012-13 season.
Meanwhile, this was the first Villa game in which Referee Clegg had officiated since his disgraceful post match claims in the previous season's FA Cup.

Villa lose four successive games for the first time in their history having conceded twelve goal in two games and fall to eight in the table - their lowest ever position.
However the result and run of form were overshadowed, as, after playing the first half of the previous game with ten men due to player absence, Villa were once again reduced to ten men after Archie Hunter fell ill at the interval.
The illness Hunter suffered was sadly far more serious than the ‘fainting’ episode that was reported as the Villa great had actually suffered a heart attack which would end his football career at the age of 30 having played for Villa since their first FA Cup outing in 1879.

Meanwhile, Daniel Paton makes his Villa debut. interestingly two days earlier, his older brother, Jim Paton, featured as a guest for Villa against Birmingham St George's with his arrival being described at the time as the ‘appearance of the erstwhile Vale of Leven centre-forward, James Paton’ James Jabez Paton, born July 1855 in Glasgow eventually arrived from Vale of Leven in 1892 and played just once for Villa, in September of that year against Sunderland. At the age of 34 he was then the oldest player to make a League appearance for Villa.
