Biography

Player #121 for Aston Villa, Bertram Albert Sharp, known as Bert Sharp played as a full back for the club.

Bert played for Villa in the 1897-98 and 1898-99.

Bert was born in Hereford on 8th January 1876 and made his debut for the club as a 21 year old on 2nd October 1897.

Villa had signed Bert from Hereford Thistle and he made 23 appearances in his 2 seasons with the club.

Bert made his biggest impact on the first team in 1897-98 when he appeared on 18 occasions.

In the following season Villa went on to win the League title but Bert was only to appearing a further 4 times.

Bert had joined the Villa along with his younger brother Jack, a winger and was intended to play as back-up to Villa legend Howard Spencer however a nasty leg injury to Spencer unexpectedly promoted Sharp to the first team in his first season.

After his first season things were looking positive for the young full back however the signing of Tommy Bowman and the subsequent return of Howard Spencer meant Bert, like his brother, was unable to force his way into being a permanent fixture in the side in the 1898-99 title winning season.

After making his final appearance for Villa on 31st December 1898 Bert once again moved with his brother Jack, this time to Everton.

Bert had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Bert passed away in Liverpool on 2nd November 1949 aged 73.
