Villa lose for the first time in five but are heavily beaten and now have just one win in seven second tier games under Jimmy McMullan. The latest reverse - Villa's 40th in 99 games under McMullan - would prove to be his last as he was sacked with Villa off the pace in the promotion race despite a strong first six games. Meanwhile, midfielder Tommy Wood made the last of his 71 appearances for Villa aged 28 before moving on to Newport County in December 1936.

Match Timeline

Villa lose six consecutive games for the first time in their history as their first ever season in the second tier ends in disaster. Villa had made it just twelve wins in their last thirty six second tier games and delivered an overall record of sixteen wins, twelve draws and fourteen defeats in forty two division two matches to finish ninth. Jimmy McMullan had recorded five wins (38%), five draws and three defeats (23%) in his thirteen division two matches in charge and his successor Jimmy Hogan had delivered eleven wins (38%), seven draws and eleven defeats (39%) in his twenty nine game spell. As a result the jury was very much still out on Jimmy Hogan and but for a best run of seven wins in eight games in the Spring, Villa’s season would have proved significantly worse. Meanwhile, midfielder Tom Griffiths made the last of his 68 appearances for Villa aged 31 before moving on to Wrexham, whilst forward Matt Moralee made his twelfth and final appearance aged 26 before moving on to Leicester City in November 1937.

Villa end an outstanding season with four consecutive victories, twenty five in total, an FA Cup semi final, the scalps of three division one clubs, promotion and the second division Championship after two seasons away from the top flight. The difference to 1936-37 could barely be overstated and the difficulties of the previous three seasons were soon forgotten. The jury on Jimmy Hogan was no longer out, he was the mastermind of promotion and a return to scoring form for Villa, as the top flight beckoned.
