Birkir Bjarnason

Player #901 for Aston Villa, Birkir Bjarnason played as a midfielder for the club between 2016-17 and 2018-19.

Bjarnason was born in Akureyri, Iceland on 27 May 1988.

Villa had signed Bjarnason on 25 January 2017 from FC Basel 1893 for a fee of £1,800,000.

Birkir made his competitive debut for Villa at the age of 28 in the 0-3 away defeat to Brentford on Tuesday, 31 January 2017 and and he went on to make 8 appearances, 3 as a substitute in 2016-17.

Bjarnason was initially a sporadic starter in the 2017-18 campaign - making just 5 starts to the New Year however thereafter he became a more regular feature of the team with 15 starts in total and 14 substitute appearances across the season.

Bjarnason scored his debut goal for the club in the 4-1 home win over Wigan Athletic in the 2nd Round of the EFL Cup and went on to score 4 goals in 2017-18 with his other 3 goals coming in high scoring wins in the league victories over Bristol City 5-0, Reading 3-0 and Champions Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1. In consequence Bjarnason’s goal contributions tended to embellish results rather than be critical game changing strikes.

Bjarnason would again be in and out of the team in Villa’s 2018-19 promotion season making 17 appearances, including 11 starts and scoring twice. Unlike in 2017-18 however Bjarnason’s goals included a 94th minute winner over Wigan Athletic and the equalising goal in the draw away to Bristol City.

Bjarnason made his final appearance for Villa aged 30 as an 80’ substitute for Henri Lansbury in the last league game of the 2018-19 season on Sunday, 5 May 2019 - his first appearance since Sunday, 10 March 2019.

Bjarnason wouldn’t feature in the squad for either leg of the Play off semi final versus West Bromwich Albion or Villa’s Wembley Play Off win over Derby County on Monday, 27 May 2019.

Villa released Bjarnason ahead of the 2019-20 Premier League season on 8 August 2019 aged 31.

A dependable midfielder but whose time with Villa on balance could, and probably should, have delivered more.

Bjarnason played under Steve Bruce and Dean Smith.
