Biography

Player #369 for Aston Villa, Cuthbert Phillips, known as Charlie Phillips, played as a winger for the club in the outside right position.

Charlie played for Villa between 1935-36 and 1937-38 making 22 appearances and scoring 5 goals.

Gordon was born in Victoria, Monmouthshire, Wales, on 23 June 1910 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 1 February 1936 aged 25.

Villa had signed Charlie from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of £9,000 in January 1936 as Villa splashed the cash in an attempt to stave off relegation.

The gamble didn’t work however and despite Charlie hitting 2 goals in 11 appearances, including one on debut, Villa were relegated for the first time in their history.

Charlie stayed with Villa in the second tier and helped build the foundations for Villa to win the second division championship and a return to the top flight with 2 goal in 9 games.

Charlie left the club before promotion was sealed however and played his final game for Villa on 1 January 1938 aged 27 ahead of a move to Birmingham in March 1938.

Charlie had played under managers Jimmy McMullan and Jimmy Hogan.

Charlie passed away in Lichfield on 15th October 1969 aged 59.

Villa lose six consecutive games for the first time in their history as their first ever season in the second tier ends in disaster. Villa had made it just twelve wins in their last thirty six second tier games and delivered an overall record of sixteen wins, twelve draws and fourteen defeats in forty two division two matches to finish ninth. Jimmy McMullan had recorded five wins (38%), five draws and three defeats (23%) in his thirteen division two matches in charge and his successor Jimmy Hogan had delivered eleven wins (38%), seven draws and eleven defeats (39%) in his twenty nine game spell. As a result the jury was very much still out on Jimmy Hogan and but for a best run of seven wins in eight games in the Spring, Villa’s season would have proved significantly worse. Meanwhile, midfielder Tom Griffiths made the last of his 68 appearances for Villa aged 31 before moving on to Wrexham, whilst forward Matt Moralee made his twelfth and final appearance aged 26 before moving on to Leicester City in November 1937.
