• Having scored six in two games and recorded consecutive top flight wins to climb to 14th in the table, the Birmingham Evening Mail decides to lead with the headline "CAS DOUBLE LIFTS VILLA GLOOM" as Villa record their fifteenth win in thirty six games under Jozef Vengloš (eleven defeats).

• Gary Penrice contributes his first assist in a Villa shirt on his 3rd appearance to make it W2 D0 L1 so far in his Villa career.

• Derek Mountfield secures his 50th win in a Villa shirt on his 109th appearances (107 Starts) to make it W50 D22 L37, 16 Goals and 2 Assists so far in his Villa career.

• Villa recover from two goals down to hit an 89' equaliser and extend their unbeaten first division run to three and make it fifteen wins in thirty seven games under Jozef Vengloš (eleven defeats) as they climb to 13th in the table.

Jozef Vengloš' Villa end a run of three unbeaten with a heavy defeat at Highbury. Already 0-3 behind, Villa lose 'keeper Nigel Spink to injury forcing Mark Blake to take on the gloves with no substitute goalkeeper available. Blake concedes a further two goals in the final 10 as Villa drop back to 16th in the table.

Jozef Vengloš' Villa respond to defeat with a subsequent draw but they remain 17th in the table but are six points above the relegation places. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Lee Butler made his final appearance for Villa aged 24 before moving on to Barnsley in July 1991 for a fee of £165,000. Butler had kept goal for Villa on 10 occasions between 1988-89 and 1990-91.

• Villa concede five goals for the second time in six games. 

• Defender Andy Comyn, 22, made his final appearance in a Villa shirt before moving on to Derby County in August 1991 for a fee of £200,000. Comyn had cost Villa £34,000 two years earlier and had made 21 appearances across the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons.

• The Birmingham Evening Mail sink to a new low as their ongoing attempts to destabilise the reign of Jozef Vengloš sees them plaster their back page with “FOR GOD'S SAKE GO DR JO!”. Perhaps emboldened by their similar successful campaign earlier in the season against the manager of neighbours Birmingham, the paper was anything but constructive or helpful after an admittedly chastening defeat. The irony however that they admitted “It was true that in a vividly entertaining first half Villa should have scored four times” was not lost on readers who witnessed the game without an agenda. 

• Villa had suffered from bad luck and naiveté throughout Vengloš’ reign but the number of bad performances could be counted on one hand, results however was another thing. 

• Villa had now lost for fifteenth time in forty three games under Jozef Vengloš having also secured fifteen wins to sit 17th in the table - exactly where they had been two years previously under the feted Graham Taylor - four points clear of relegation with a game in hand over the bottom three.

Jozef Vengloš' Villa end the season with a draw and unbeaten in two after a troubling second half of the season. One win in the final ten games and five defeats, three of which saw Villa concede five goals had followed a previous 10 game spell of three wins and five defeats. November to January had also seen a ten game spell of three defeats and three wins and so you would have to go back to October to find any sign of consistent, positive form. That though was the paradox as Jozef Vengloš first sixteen games had brought nine wins and just three defeats. In the end then a season that had promised so much became unrecognisable after defeat in Milan in the UEFA Cup. The consequences of that downturn in form resulted in the inevitable departure of Vengloš and also the loss of Villa captain David Platt. Whilst not the most charismatic of heroes, midfielder Platt had played for Villa between 1987-88 and 1990-91 and had become an instant success in Villa’s midfield with his non stop energy, box to box movement and goalscoring prowess. Platt made 155 appearances and scored 68 goals in his 3 seasons with Villa. Villa had paid Crewe Alexandra £200,000 for his services and he left aged 25 for a fee of £5,500,000. A club figurehead and now England international was allowed to leave as Villa fans were once again calling into question Chairman Doug Ellis’ motives following his terrible strategy and management decisions in the mid 80’s and the loss of Villa boss Graham Taylor the previous season - seemingly without a fight. As a result the close of the 1990-91 season threw up far more questions than answers. Those concerns would however be addressed just weeks later as a new era dawned for Villa in the 1990s. Centre forward Tony Cascarino made his last appearance for Villa aged 28 before moving to Celtic in July for a fee of £1,100,000. Cascarino had played for Villa in 1989-90 and 1990-91 making 54 appearances and scoring 12 goals. Right back Kevin Gage made his final appearance for Villa aged 27 before moving on to Sheffield United in November 1991 for a fee of £150,000. Gage had been used relatively sparingly in his final season with Villa but that could not hide the outstanding contribution he made to the club, a regular scorer (for a full back) and obvious commitment, Gage was another outstanding buy by Graham Taylor. Gage played for Villa between 1987-88 and 1990-91 making 145 and scoring 12 goals.

• New boss Ron Atkinson’s first game in charge comes against the club he left to join Villa and amid an acrimonious atmosphere Villa fall two behind before Atkinson’s new signings inspire a celebrated fight back to claim victory.

• Left back Steve Staunton, 22, makes a goalscoring debut after joining from Liverpool for a fee of £1,100,000 earlier in the month to become the 670th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

• Centre back, and another Villa legend to come, Shaun Teale, 27, makes his debut in a Villa shirt after signing from AFC Bournemouth for £300,000 in July 1991 to become the 671st player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

• Midfielder Paul Mortimer, 23, makes his debut in a Villa shirt after moving from Charlton Athletic for £350,000 to become the 672nd player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

• Midfielder Kevin Richardson, 28, makes his debut in a Villa shirt after moving from Real Sociedad for a fee of £450,000 to become the 673rd player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

• Centre forward and future Villa legend Dalian Atkinson, 23, makes a goalscoring debut after moving from Real Sociedad for a fee of £1,600,000 to become the 674th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

• Veteran centre forward Cyrille Regis, 33, makes a goalscoring debut for Villa after joining from Coventry City on a free transfer in July 1991 to become the 675th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

• Villa suffer their first defeat under Ron Atkinson as future Villa boss (2016-18) Steve Bruce scores the winner from the penalty spot. 

• Derek Mountfield, 28, makes his 120th and final appearance in a Villa shirt (118 Starts) before moving on to Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 1991 for a fee of £150,000. Part of a legendary defensive group with Paul McGrath and Kent Nielsen who are fondly remembered by all who saw them in claret and blue, Mountfield left with a record of W52 D26 L42, 17 Goals, 2 Assists, 2 Bookings and 1 Red Card at a goal involvement rate of one for every 6.32 games he played across his four seasons with Villa.
